Outline for Writing a Research Paper (1,000 – 1,200 words).
Sample of an argumentative style essay can be found in lesson 8.
Include at least 4 academic sources, such as peer reviewed journal articles, scholarly books, and government reports. In addition to the minimum number of required academic sources, you are permitted to use media sources, providing they are from established, reliable sources. You are required to include the word count of your writing at the end of your assignment. Keep a copy of any print source in case your lecturer asks to see them; do not include them with your assignment.
Title Page
Please provide basic info: essay title, date, student name, ID number and class number.
Introduction
This section should introduce the topic and contain brief background (or current) information which helps the reader to understand the subject. This should be followed by a clear presentation of what exactly your issue is. There should then be a statement of the thesis or aim and a brief outline of the structure of your paper.
Body
This will vary depending on the type of essay you are planning to write. An example of how you would structure the body of an argumentative style essay is given below. However, please consult your lecture notes for examples of other formats, such as for a cause and effect or compare and contrast style structure.
Example of an argumentative structure: Present your pro-arguments (arguments that affirm and support the thesis), counter-argument (previous opinions/arguments that are opposed to the thesis, used to show that you have a greater understanding of your issue, not just a one-sided view) and refutations (an evaluation of the counter-arguments that shows its errors). Note that the above may be presented in any order that you like as long as there is a natural and logical flow of information. Be sure to cite the sources of all the arguments/counter-arguments.
The number of counter-arguments and refutation/pro-arguments may vary. However, this paper should have a minimum of three arguments and at least one counter-argument.
Conclusion
Restate main ideas and the thesis (paraphrase – do not copy what you have already written).
References
Follow the APA style and present a list of all sources included in the paper.

Purpose
The purpose of this assessment is for you to demonstrate your ability to apply ethical reasoning to clinical problems. This will prepare you for similar reasoning at the bedside when you encounter ethical dilemmas in practice. Doing this task well will demonstrate to yourself that you can participate in meaningful ethical decision making in participation with patient, family and care team.

Task details
Discuss one of two case studies presented below in light of the moral theories or ethical principles (Principlism) that should be applied to the situation. In particular, justify whether (or not) a RN ought to follow the doctor’s orders in case one, or whether (or not) they should follow the family’s wishes in case two. Justify the course of action by using an argument developed from one or more Moral Theories.

The rubric describes the specific instructions. To be awarded high marks you must create a logical argument to justify a course of action by the clinician/s involved in the care of the patient in the case study.

Write in third person: ‘the RN should” not ‘I would’.

Suggested approach

Include a title page correctly filled out with your student ID details.
Choose only one of the above scenarios.
Include a brief introduction & conclusion with your paper.
You may make use of sub-headings.
Use APA6/7 referencing both for in-text citations and on the reference list.
Ensure your discussion of relevant ethical principles (or theory) is relevant to your case study.
Look at two to three moral theories in your discussion and if you compare contrasting theories this will help develop your justification

You must integrate literature into your argument as one means of justification – the literature may be selected from textbooks, journal articles or other reputable sources (such as the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy – https://plato.stanford.edu/ ). The sources do not have a specific date requirement (for example you could use Beauchamp and Childress original work from the 1970s, if you wish). Differing sources have differing approaches to the same ethical principles and reading widely will improve your ethical reasoning. Therefore, 4 references is a minimum (as a guide) but ultimately you will be marked upon how well your references support your argument.
