Extended Definition Essay

Instructions:
Choose a word or a combination of words that has a very rich connotative meaning, one that has definitions that have evolved over time. There may be multiple denotative, as well as connotative definitions for this word, as you will have to write a 4+ page paper on it. You should spend time researching your word, discovering all of its origins, its breakdowns, its basic denotative meanings, and more importantly, its connotative meanings and changes. Don’t
get ‘pigeonholed’ by the term ‘definition’. Avoid creating a narrative,
‘list type’ essay. Try to examine larger concepts, not just simple
definitions. Explore the applications of this word. How has it used in society? How has its use/design changed since its conception? Pick a word or word combo that you will enjoy researching and designing an essay around. While there is no minimum requirement, there should be a good deal of included textual support that is transitioned smoothly into the flow of the writing.
While this is a creative exploration, it is also a research essay. You
should include plenty of connected source support, demonstrating the
introduction/transition style. Try to include authoritative quote analysis. This
is an opportunity to be creative as you will be designing your own
exploration within the structured format of the essay assignment.
