climate justice and design

This week and semester we are learning about the SES lens (social ecological systems resilience), what it is, and how to apply it assessing climate design interventions.

The assignment this week is finalization your SES analysis of a case study/precedent and prepare a short (5 min-ish) presentation.

Project description: Work with a partner (social capital, collaboration) to develop a “sharable” artifact (collages, slide deck, sketches, diagrams, performance, story) that helps us as your colleagues to understand the project, how it attempts to address climate issue(s), and how well it contributes to SES resilience. We will review/discuss these together, and continue learning as we review them.

1. Choose a design project/intervention that addresses a climate issue(s) —these can include greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and/or climate change and/or extreme climate events (adaptation).

2. Assess the project through an SES lens. Answer the following:

How does it meet the needs of SES? Social (human) systems? Ecological/natural systems and species?
How does it enable SES resilience? SES resilience is “the capacity of the social ecological system to absorb disturbance and reorganize while undergoing change to retain function.”

3. Use the (3x) SES tools to analyze the case study.

An example of a climate response that encourages SES resilience: a wetland park along the coastline that helps to mitigate the impact of a storm and its affects on people systems (homes, businesses etc) while also encouraging biodiversity of species (ecological systems), and absorb carbon (green plants). This park might also have educational and volunteer opportunities to help local people learn about SES resilience so that they can actively play a role in changing and adapting their city/community with climate change. The wetland park helps absorbs disturbances of climate change such as sea level rise and extreme climate events such as hurricanes, while fostering change with social systems (people learning and participating), and retaining function (homes and businesses as well as other species are able to live and reproduce).

Bring a project idea to discuss/workshop with the learning community. Create an image that helps us into your project idea
so we can discuss
Project criteria:
The project/case study needs to interest you or one that you have worked on (work, studio, Gateway, community practice,
thesis, other etc)
You will be able to analyze the project using the SES framework and tools
You will be able to center a group or community that has been historically marginalized or is an environmental justice
community.

Prisons were designed by men for men! Discuss this assertion by considering some of the causes behind the decision to treat female and male offenders differently. Discussion should be referred to Hong Kong Prison System.

• Demonstrate appropriate essay structure, references and academic style;
• Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of your chosen issue;
• Evaluate concepts, principles and arguments; and
• Identify appropriate evidence/reasons to support your arguments and insights.

No Plagiarism & Discussion should be based on Hong Kong Prison System.

Thanks!

The History of Health Care and Health Insurance in the US

Students will analyze the current literature and develop a-research paper on the topic of “The History of Health Care and Health Insurance in the US”. The literature review must be of scholarly sources (peer reviewed). The student should avoid the use of google, MedEd and Medline, Yahoo, etc. The paper should be written 12-point Arial font and have appropriate APA style formatting with a minimum of four scholarly (peer reviewed) references with the required text being one source. Avoid plagiarism and make sure to cite the references appropriately. The document length should be a minimum of six (6) pages excluding the front page and references page.

Paper on digital connectivity and protest

Read Zeynep Tufekci’s book, Twitter and Tear Gas: The Power and Fragility of Networked Protest, entire book.. The idea of technological affordances – “the actions a given technology facilitates or makes possible” – is a central theme of Tufekci’s book, just as it has been a central theme of our course. How do the complex affordances of digital connectivity – affordances that may change over time and differ across platforms – help explain both the strengths and the weaknesses of networked protest?

The book is attached in the files.

The paper should be about 2,500 words. Quotations or citations can be indicated through the use of page numbers in parentheses. No need for a bibliography since there is no need to read or cite anything else.

IS Strategic Plan Report

This assessment is in two parts:
Part 1 – IS Strategic Plan Report: This component of the assessment task requires students to work in groups and design an IS strategic plan of 3,000 (+/- 10%) words to enable digital transformation in the case study organisation. A case study scenario will form the basis of your evaluation. (Part 1 is worth 20/40 marks.)
Part 2 – IS Strategic Plan Presentation: This component of the assessment task requires each assessment group to give a short, 10-minute presentation of the IS strategic plan to be delivered during the allocated tutorial class. Presentations will be held in Week 12 classes. (Part 2 is worth 20/40 marks).
Submission: The IS strategic plan report must be submitted by the Due Date electronically via Turnitin.
Learning Outcomes
The targeted Course Learning Outcomes for this assessment are:
CLO1: Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts and business value of Information Systems.
CLO2: Explain the role of information systems in managing and sustaining digital transformation.
CLO3: Critically analyse enterprise information systems and their role in data-driven decision-making.
CLO4: Identify, evaluate and communicate strategic and operational issues suited to the application of information systems management concepts and theories to real-world practice.
Assessment details
Part 1: IS strategic plan report
Students are required to analyse a case scenario and develop an IS Strategic Plan to enable digital transformation in the case study organisation by drawing on the content of the lectures (particularly weeks 1 to 11). Each group will have 4-5 students. The group should select a digital transformation technology and commence work on drafting the report from week 5.
Details of the case study organisation are provided in the Resources section below.
The following technologies for digital transformation will be discussed in this course. Please ensure that your group selects one of the following as the focus of your IS strategic plan:
Big data analytics
Cloud computing
Artificial intelligence
Internet of things (IoT)
The IS strategic plan report must clearly communicate:
The nature of the digital transformation
Key issues addressed
Justification of strategic actions selected
The value proposition of digital transformation
Roadmap for implementation
