ANTH 354 Assignment 5 Essay (25%) 1500 words min
Following is a list of topics for the second essay assignment. Answer any one of these questions, which relate to the material presented in Units 1 through 4 (although information may also be found in units not yet covered). You are encouraged to use your course materials, however, you MUST also use at least three (3) outside academic sources such as articles from academic journals or from other textbooks.
Suggested Topics
1. In order to explain the numerous facts about language development, linguists have tried to formulate a theory that applies to all natural languages. These principles, which are known as linguistic universals, offer insights into how children acquire language and also answer questions such as why language is universal, why it is mastered so rapidly, and why there are only loose or incomplete connections between linguistic knowledge and experience. These features of language development follow from a single premise—that they are part of a biological blueprint for language development. Discuss this concept, as well as related theories of language acquisition, and describe the place of human interaction in language acquisition.
2. Semantic analysis looks at the conventional meaning of words and word combinations as well as how the structure of a sentence contributes to meaning. This is a technical approach to meaning. However, what is meant comes not only from the use of particular words or word combinations but also from the speaker’s culture, the context in which the statement is made, and the speaker’s intent. How can we grasp the meaning of a statement, and what do we have to take into consideration? What does a statement tell us about the speaker, and what allows us to know a speaker’s intent? Discuss the place of semantics and pragmatics in the study of language.
3. Roughly five to six thousand languages are spoken in the world today. However, a hundred years from now, those numbers will almost certainly fall to a thousand or even fewer. Describe, in detail, some of the forces that are reducing linguistic diversity. Discuss what is lost when a language disappears, and describe some efforts at language revitalization.
4. Describe the process of language acquisition in hearing children and deaf children. Do Hockett’s universal features of language include the languages of the deaf? If not, propose changes to the design features. Does Chomsky’s idea of a Universal Grammar exclude the deaf?

Eugenics and the Science of Heredity
In her essay, “Many Varieties of Beautiful Inheritance,” Historian Ruth Schwartz Cowan describes the various forms of eugenics that became popular throughout the world in the first few decades of the twentieth century.
Please answer the following question in essay form: How did eugenics borrow on the evolving sciences of heredity to become a popular movement among the educated classes in the United States and other countries, and why did eugenics take the form that it did in different countries?
Eugenics took many forms in the first half of the twentieth century. In your response, you should therefore compare how eugenics was embraced in at least two countries (or parts of the world).
CMNS 358 Assignment 1 Essay (20%) 1000 words – 4 pages
Write a critical reflection in essay form. Choose one of the topics below. Regard these topics as prompts to help you begin a critical assessment of the popular culture around you, rather than as strict limitations. Draw on your enthusiasm for works you have an interest in, and use this energy to drive your critical perspective.
1. Write an analysis of a work of popular culture (inside or outside of this course) that holds particular interest for you. Use one of the critical paradigms outlined in Units 1 to 3 as a tool or method for understanding the popular product. You may apply the theoretical model to the popular work, or you may measure the suitability of the model against the complexities of your chosen popular work. Ideally, the theory and the text will work together so that you discover something new about both, rather than simply using one to understand the other; however, the latter approach is acceptable.
As a creative option, you might wish to consider how a theorist you have read about would regard a particular work of popular culture. For example, how would Karl Marx watch “The Simpsons”? In what ways would Steven Lukes understand “Mad Men”? How might Theodor Adorno listen to a Justin Bieber album?
2. Choose a work of popular culture, such as a compact disc, a pulp novel, a movie, or a television production, and analyze it from three of Raymond Williams’s perspectives on the meaning of the word “culture”: the ideal, the documentary, and the social, based on your understanding of these categories from Unit 2.
Answer such questions as: Which audience does the work play to? Who, if anyone, in the audience does the work validate? Who, if anyone, is the work likely to offend or provoke? Who benefits from attitudes or habits normalized by the work? As a product, how does it reflect the social conditions of its production? How do people consume it? You do not need to answer all of these questions—regard them as prompts to begin your critical argument.
major essay
Major Research Paper: Choose a Canadian issue, person, event, theory, or movement from the list of approved topics under Handouts in MyLS or about which you are particularly passionate. Research it extensively and remember to think and write critically as well. This is not simply a descriptive research paper. It should have a thesis statement that is supported by concrete data and evidence, and a discernible analysis. Use a wide array of academic sources. A research essay of this size should have at least five (5) academic sources (scholarly books and journal articles). These sources may include one chapter or article from your textbook, which can be helpful in defining terms. If you are including any charts or diagrams, collect these in an appendix to be included at the end of the paper. The paper ought to be 8-10 typed, double-spaced pages, including citations, and a bibliography, but excluding a title page if one is used (e.g. in APA or Chicago style), and any appendices or diagrams. Be sure not to exceed this page limit.
Please note: All topics not chosen from the list of topics posted on MyLS under Handouts must be approved by the course instructor to ensure that your final paper will meet the assignment requirements. Be sure to write your proposal using the Essay Proposal Guidelines and to submit it to the dropbox for feedback by the due date. If you are choosing your own topic for the major research paper, consider one of the following topics within a Canadian context: women and poverty, women and health, women and violence (this should be narrowed down), women and unions, women and religion, or women and politics, etc. If you choose a topic like women and religion, try to narrow the topic down to a particular practice and/or period of time. If you choose to look at an outstanding historical figure, keep in mind that this is a research paper, not a biographical or persuasive paper. You are not simply to describe the person’s career in activism, but rather to make a particular argument about the person’s contribution to a specific feminist movement, or her particular politics, activist strategy, biases, etc. In all cases, analyse how the movement or the person contributed to specific additional rights for women in Canada and whether or not the gains have been sustained, OR analyse the factors involved in a particular social development or concern affecting women in Canada and why we see specific social or political effects. Whether you choose a topic from the pre-approved list or develop your own topic, please incorporate a personal response to the importance of the issue, the struggle, the gains or the retreat.
Essays must include an introduction, an analysis, and a concluding paragraph. Sources must be carefully cited and a bibliography attached. You are permitted to use any standard form of citations (Chicago style, MLA, APA – just be consistent in your application) in your papers. You will be expected to avoid the use of exclusive language in all your written submissions.
