Has the pandemic changed this society’s definition of “essential workers”?

Sociologists use the scientific method to make sure their investigations yield reliable and verifiable information that can be used to address real world issues and problems. As you learned in chapter 2 of Ferris & Stein (2020), one important step in the scientific method is selecting a design for data collection that would be appropriate for the research question the investigation is trying to answer. Below are some research questions that a sociologist might ask about the impact of the pandemic on parts of our social world.
Choose ONE of the issues listed and explain which research design you would choose to address the selected issue. Explain why you chose that design. Which design would you not select? Why?
Has the pandemic changed this society’s definition of “essential workers”?
How much of the current unemployment rate is a consequence of worker burnout?
How has quality of life issues been impacted by people’s ability to work from home?
Has the pandemic had a negative effect on school-aged children’s desire to interact with other children?
To what extent has social media shaped people’s definition of a “new normal”?
What has been the role of the pandemic in the success of large corporations and the demise of small businesses?
Which of the major theoretical frameworks or theories presented in the textbook readings would you suggest the sociologist use to explain findings from the study? [functionalism, conflict, feminist, Weberian, symbolic interaction, postmodern, midrange]
Format: Typewritten, double-spaced, checked for grammar and spelling. Use APA format for your in-text citations and References page. Title page required for each assignment.
References required: Ferris & Stein textbook, chapters 1 and 2.

MUST BE IN APA FORMAT

This activity calls you to reflect on your present occupation or expected career and use the knowledge provided in the Johnston et al. (2018) article to describe the kinds of issues or problems you have faced, you are facing now, or will be facing.

First, read the following article:
Johnston, L.D., Miech, R.A., O’Malley, P.M., Bachman, J.G., Schulenberg,J.E., & Patrick, M.E. (2018). Monitoring the Future national survey results on drug use, 1975-2017: Overview, key findings on adolescent drug use. http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/148123
or simply click below either place for the PDF file: https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/148123/Overview%202018%20FINAL%20print%201-30.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y

PDF file, Monitoring the future
Note that the Johnston et al (2018) article is not from an academic journal article. It is, however, known nationally as a very credible paper. The proper APA citation for your References section is:
Johnston, L.D., Miech, R.A., O’Malley, P.M., Bachman, J.G., Schulenberg,J.E., & Patrick, M.E. (2018). Monitoring the Future national survey results on drug use, 1975-2017: Overview, key findings on adolescent drug use. Ann Arbor, MI: Institute for Social Research, The University of Michigan. http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/148123
The Johnston et al. (2018) article is a long one, but there are a lot of graphs and reading is very interesting. Don’t wait to read this at the last minute.
This activity calls you to reflect on your present occupation or expected career and use the knowledge provided in the Johnston et al. (2018) article to describe the kinds of issues or problems you have faced, you are facing now, or will be facing. You can do this regardless of your specific occupation or career goals. You may take the perspective of a parent, retail worker, teacher, probation officer, police officer, or whatever. Address the questions:
What challenges do you anticipate facing from the use and abuse of drugs in your future (or present) position? Consider your work environment.
How can you be better prepared to meet those challenges?
List three things that you learned from this article that you will perhaps “take with you” after this class is over. That is, information you’re likely to remember? Elaborate here. Don’t be superficial. Supply some details
In addition, find at least one academic journal article published since 2000 that relates to some aspect of the Johnston et al. (2018) article. Describe how this journal article relates or sheds light on any issue, or assertion, or conclusion that you read in Johnston et al. Remember, let the reader know you read the full-text article, and not merely a summary; elaborate, provide some details from your academic journal article. A good way to do this is to provide details as well as comment on any strengths and/or weaknesses of the journal article.
Review the Paper Grading Rubric in your RESOURCES section. In addition, before you begin your research paper, read the following short handouts available down at the RESOURCES section of your MODULES page: (1) Definition of an Academic Journal; (2) APA Style; (3) Things to Remember about Your Research Paper; (4) How to Write a Better Research Paper; and (5) Plagiarism and the 6 Word Rule. Then check out the model papers. Finally, begin collecting information about your paper and making an outline/writing.

Company Case Study

Directions: Find an article online about a publicly traded firm’s decision regarding at least two different project alternatives. To be clear, you are to choose (1) decision, and analyze at least (2) different project alternatives for that (1) decision. What was the decision that the firm made about the different projects and what was the decision process that they used to come up with their final decision? Did it turn out to be the correct decision? Using publicly available financial data critically analyze the firm’s decision and its alternatives. Then formulate a plan to either adopt one of the alternative projects or to support the original project decision depending upon which project would be the most beneficial to the firm. Defend your answers in a 750 to 1,000-word report and cite your sources.

Project
Option #3: Design/Build Contagion–Resistant School (Construction Focus)
Overview:
Your local public school
system must build additional elementary school buildings in order to address
social-distancing requirements to minimize the risk of infection from
coronavirus and similar future contagions. Detailed requirements are well known
for things such as fire safety, parking, busing, and student drop-off/pick-up,
but largely unknown for minimizing the spread of infection. Social/physical
distancing, for example, may be an option for designing large classroom sizes,
but most sites have challenging space constraints, so other options such as
plexiglass cubicles and other innovative ideas are welcome. Spacing to improve
the flow of students moving through the building in a manner that minimizes
contagion spread will also be a challenge—especially with such young children.
The school system has decided
to contract with your firm to design and build the first such school of its
kind, and if the design is flexible enough to address site-specific
requirements across the large, suburban school district, your firm stands to
benefit by having a strong competitive advantage to build many more such
schools—both for this large school district and others like it across the
country.
Stakeholders: The county school board, the county
executive’s office, and your state department of health are the primary
stakeholders.
This project has three
phases:
·
Phase
I: Design. A full six months has been allocated for this phase,
given the importance of getting a good, flexible design for this first school
of its kind, and one that is intended to serve as a template for multiple
future design/build projects for elementary schools across the same school
district.
·
Phase
II: Build. Six months have also been allocated for this phase.
While aggressive, this timeline can hopefully be reduced further as more
schools are built from the same core template.
·
Phase
III: Template Refinement. One month has been allocated for this
phase, for the purpose of channeling all key lessons learned from Phases I and
II, in hopes of benefitting future similar projects with a more mature design
template.
Project teams are located in
the U.S.
Company: Building Blocks Construction, Inc.
Duration: One year
Project Cost: $50 million

Midterm Project Proposal and Research- Social Justice

My topic is: Gender wage gap between Hispanics and whites.
I would need an annotated bibliography in a separate page please.
Part 1: Written Proposal (formative assignment)
First, you will propose your project topic here so I can give you feedback before you create your entire project. Your proposal should be between 150-200 words. Your proposal should include your issue worded as a question and will be graded on its thoroughness. As such, you may wish to address the following questions in your paragraph-form proposal of 150-200 words. (Please do not respond in bullet points.).
What is the topic? (This should be labeled and articulated in one or two short sentences.)
What is the issue? (This should be labeled and written as a question)
What personal values, interests, career, event, policy, law, or text (fictional or non, film) are you using to ground your project? (That is, what text–or texts–gave you the idea for this project)?
Why do you find this topic interesting?
What do you know about this topic already?
What type of information do you think you’ll need to begin your research for this project considering the necessary components for the Final Project?
Please be sure to include the word count in parenthesis at the end of your post; for example: (200 words). Link to example student proposal
(Links to an external site.)
.
Part 2: Research-Annotated Bibliography
Now that you have a direction, you will find at least 5 reliable, relevant sources. Use Ask a Librarian
(Links to an external site.)
and be sure to provide your information to have the transcript emailed to you. create an annotated bibliography with the help of an annotated bibliography libguide. This libguide can help with social justice research
(Links to an external site.)
too.
Create an annotated bibliography with at least 5 sources that includes:
A citation for the source done in the chosen citation style (APA, MLA, etc.)
A summary of the source: one or two sentences describing the source-what information it covers and the purpose of the source.
An evaluation of the sources: this can include an assessment of the expertise of the author, an evaluation of the scope of the work, etc. Is the source useful? Current? Reliable? Authoritative? Accurate? Fact or opinion? Also, include an assessment on the significance of the source as it relates to your topic/how it will be useful to your Final Project. Usually this type of evaluation is two to three sentences long.
Add your Ask a Librarian transcript to the end of the document.
Remember what information you are needing to research by reviewing the final project requirements:
Overview *Use Ask a Librarian
Rationale (This does not necessarily have to come from research)
Stance: At least 4 reasons for your stance *Use Ask a Librarian
Fair Minded Critical Thinking: (This does not necessarily have to come from research)
Detractors: (Most of this comes from my slides on reliable sources/fake news, your background knowledge, or an Internet search)
Help Section: (This could just be a simple Internet search)
Source section (This is where you will put the sources you will use that are you are finding now. You may need to find additional sources/more than 5 when completing your Final Project.)
About the author
Research Tips
Take your research question (issue) and pull out the key terms. Next, generate a list of synonyms and other related words. You have now expanded your search terms (think Boolean operators) for research and opportunities to find research on your topic and areas related to your topic!
Once you find sources, determine if you need/want to read the entire text:
Look at the source. Is this a scholarly source?
(Links to an external site.)
Examples:
Research/Empirical
Article reporting on the results of one or more studies or experiments, written by the person(s) who conducted the research. This is considered one type of primary source. Look in the title or abstract for words like study, research, measure, subjects, data, effects, survey, or statistical which might indicate empirical research.
Professional Communication
Most scholarly journals publish articles that pertain to the workings of the profession but are not ‘scholarly’ in nature. Examples are book reviews and letters to the editor.
Meta-Analysis
A meta-analysis is a mathematical synthesis of the results of two or more primary studies that addressed the same hypothesis in the same way.
Letters of Communication
Short descriptions of important latest study or research findings which are usually considered urgent for immediate publication. Examples: breakthroughs regarding cures or treatments for previously incurable conditions, or cure for a particular outbreak of disease, like for example swine flu.
To save time in reading research:
Skim/scan the text features (title, headings, bold/italicized words, visual aids, etc.) to determine if this source is a good fit for your research question/issue.
Read the abstract (if there is one) and the beginning paragraph and last paragraph. These are the areas an author will put his/her thesis/central idea.
Based on 1 and 2, determine if the text is related to your issue and whether or not you need to spend the time to read the entire text.

A reminder on the Discussion Forum: requires you to discuss specific areas in the textbook. You are expected to contribute with your views or ideas in an elaborate way (over 300 words) with complete sentences in paragraph form that connect to the chapter readings and additional outside sources. Cross postings with other students are highly encouraged and will result in a higher grade. Reference all materials “in-text” and on a reference list.

Business Essay Final – The Law, Technology, Risk, and Personal Finance Goals

1. Create your Assignment submission and be sure to cite your sources, use APA style as required, check your spelling.
2. Do not just answer the questions. You should be able to explain the logic behind your answer and point to a credible source to support your position, even if it is just the textbook. Invest your time wisely, giving more time to the complex answers in order to ensure that you demonstrate that you truly understand the answer. Shorter compelling answers are fine. Answers with needless filler will be marked down. In addition, submissions should include a title page and reference page in APA style.
Signature Assignment
This is a signature assignment for the School of Business and Technology BS in Business Administration Program students.
Assignment:
Go to the website of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (www.uspto.gov) and then summarize, in detail, your findings. Also, view the information about obtaining a patent then see whether you can estimate how long the process will take and what your cost will be. Lastly, do some online research on the case against patents or the patent system and summarize your findings. Providing personal observations and/or opinions on the issue is encouraged. Note: there is a strong push in the United States for abolishing patents and plenty of professional reference sources on point online.
Does your state have an income tax? What percentage of your income do you have to pay in state income tax? What about property taxes and sales taxes? How do these taxes in your area compare to those in four other states and communities of your choice? Lastly, NYC residents pay some of the nation’s highest local income tax rates. The Independent Democratic Conference in the state Senate is calling for elimination of New York City’s income tax on residents who make less than $50,000. Do some research and provide a summary on NYC’s income tax rates in general and the call for the elimination specifically. Your personal opinion and/or observations on this issue are also required.
Imagine you have $2,000 to buy or upgrade a computer system. Research hardware and software in computer magazines and on websites such as ZDNet. Visit a computer store or shop online to find the best value. List what you would buy, and write a summary explaining your choices.
Use the calculators at Dinkytown.net to answer the following questions:
a. You need $5,000 for a trip to Europe in two years. How much would you have to deposit monthly in a savings account paying 1 percent in order to meet your goal?
b. Investing $1,000 at 6 percent for five years, what is the difference in purchasing power of your savings if inflation increases by 2 percent annually during that time? By 4 percent?
c. Starting today, how much would you need to save each month in order to become a millionaire before you retire?
d. You need a new car. What car can you afford if you have $1,500 for a down payment, can make monthly payments of $300, and get $1,000 for trading in your old clunker?
e. How much house can you afford if you earn $36,000 a year and have $10,000 savings for a down payment, a $6,000 car loan balance, and no credit card debts?
