You have been named as a citizen-advocate member of the state’s Mental Health Council. One of the council’s projects is a report on the effects of deinstitutionalization on the state’s criminal justice system. In its opening section, it wants to look at this issue generally. You have been asked to research and report on this subject.
In a memorandum of approximately 2,400 words, discuss the impact of deinstitutionalization on jails and prisons over the past 35 years. How should mental-health issues be addressed in the correctional system? What protocols should be put in place to treat and manage these inmates? Be sure to consider the effects of incarceration on those with mental illness, including the use of administrative segregation, the right to treatment and the right to refuse treatment.
You should rely primarily on the readings and other materials assigned in this module; you will not receive credit without demonstrating that you have read and understood the material assigned. You may include independent sources. All information should be documented in MLA style.

In a typed essay (MLA) of at least 1600 words minimum excluding the works cited page, define your issue, lucidly explaining the current situation upon which your essay focuses- including all of the circumstances, effects, and problems that characterize it—using information discovered through research to illustrate and support the existence of the specific characteristics you describe.

The following context essay, coming after the historical context essay, is one where you will
define the current status of your topic. This essay includes explaining your specific topic,
placing it in the context of modern society, and examining the effects of your problem on the lives of individuals, society, and perhaps globally—all to show your reader why they should care
about this situation.
Assignment:
In a typed essay (MLA) of at least
1600 words minimum excluding the works cited page, define your issue, lucidly explaining the current situation upon which your essay focuses- including all of the circumstances, effects, and problems that characterize it—using information
discovered through research to illustrate and support the existence of the specific
characteristics you describe. You are required to locate and use at least five research sources in
your essay (course texts do not count against your total, though you may use them in your
essay), no more than one of which is an internet source*, for which you must provide citations
Furthermore, works cited list in MLA format.
Suggestions:
Within your introductory paragraph, you will write a
clear thesis statement
that defines your
topic, its specific characteristics, and its manifestation on society; your entire paper will be driven by this comprehensive and complex thesis statement. For example, if you were examining the problems with American obesity, you would want a strong thesis statement that contains your
position and general arguments to discuss various current issues, trends, statistics, and effects that societal obesity has on the individual and the USA in total. You should define the problem or situation by describing its individual characteristics, so you will want to focus a paragraph or closely related group of paragraphs on each characteristic, clearly stating what is unique about it by using a specific, focused topic.
the sentence, and then drawing into that paragraph evidence from your research sources
. After your evidence, you should thoroughly contextualize what you have found, that is, explain your research. After describing the unique characteristics, you will continue with an
explanation of the effects of these characteristics on society, focusing a paragraph on each specific effect. You will need to use your research in this essay to develop the characteristics of the problem, providing evidence from your research to prove and illustrate the specific characteristics of the problem.

National Day of Writing

After exploring some ideas related to “Why I Write” and the NDOW, think of 3 ideas that could lead to school and/or community events related to WRITING. They can be similar to
the ideas you’ve just explored, but as you write about your three ideas, make them
specific to YOUR school, neighborhood, or community.
Here are some questions to help you think further about this:
· Who would you get involved?
· How would you prepare for it?
· What funding might you need?
· Would your students, your colleagues, or your community like to make a video advocating for writing?
· Perhaps you could hold a community or family writing contest?
· Maybe writing a script and producing it for an October Family Literacy Night is a good choice.
· Writing Marathons are fun and can involve community members!
· Is there a community partner you could involve and interview about WHY THEY WRITE and make a podcast? There are so many possibilities!
Write your 3 ideas with enough detail specific to your local school or area that we can imagine each idea evolving into reality next October. You will submit your 3 ideas to Blackboard.
