Debbie Tascone Nursing Scholarship

1.Please Explain why you are pursuing a nursing career?

My name is Gbe Dorcas Nzoigba, I am a 2nd semester nursing student at St. Paul’s school of nursing in Queens Ny 11375. I currently work as a Pca on 4DSU parttime. I started exactly 11 months ago. I have so far enjoyed this opportunity Northwell has provided me with, I have seen myself grow tremendously interest in medicine/health developed when I took a trip back to the Democratic Republic of Congo for the summer of 2008. I am Congolese-South African. Therefore, the purpose of this trip was to help familiarize me with the Congolese culture. During my stay in Kinshasa, my younger sister contracted malaria. She was very close to death, so I prayed and cried for God to perform some miracle to cure my sister. To me, it seemed like things were not in our hands anymore. The medical costs were expensive, and they did have effective equipment or access to medicine that could spare my sister the pain she endured. Thus, the care physicians in Congo provide to their patients were inadequate, as the recovery times are way longer when compared to recovery time for sick patients in the western world. This experience was what drew my attention towards wanting to make a difference in peoples lives or during hospital stays. In a third world country If you didn’t have a good socioeconomic status, you were not able to get the healthcare you needed. I am very greatful for the health system that I was exposed to when I moved to the united states in 2014. The educational opportunities presenetd to me were endless. I would like to give back to the community. I think that my Diversity sets me apart because I have been exposed to diversity in education and health systems. Adjusting to changes or new environments would not be a problem for me as I have overcome those adaptation challenges in the past. What I have taken from these experiences is to take advantage of every opportunity. Moving across the world helped me realize that each challenge is an opportunity, and if we put too much emphasis on the problem, we might miss the opportunity. I also enjoy meeting new people and engaging in activities. What makes me a unique candidate for this program is that I speak five different languages (English, Afrikaans, Dutch, French, and Lingala). I adapt easily to an inferior environment to make it seem like home.

2. Please explain how a scholarship will help you.?

This scholarship will go entirely towards my tuition total, which is $56 000 for 18months, as I do not qualify for any aid. I currently pick up double shifts every weekend on any unit to ensure that I am able to make payments towards my education. It would be a huge honor to be awarded the Debbie Tascone Nursing Scholarship. I do not qaulify for the tuition reimbursement because my employee position is a 0.5 and therefore I cannot get tuition assistance. This scholarship with help ease my financial obligations with tuition which will allow me to focus on my academic excellence. In my upcoming semester, I will have two clinical rotations running simultaneously which will make picking up shifts a bit of a challenge but I have been mentally preparing for it. This scholarship is also one step closer for me to go back into the community and fulfill my nursing journey.

3.Pallative care is a specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focusses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness, improving qaulity of life for both the patient and the family. PLease explain what this means to you personally and how being a nurse impacts end of life treatments.?

I have been blessed with the opportunity to work on all majorirty of the units at North shore univeristy hospital. Ive flaoted and picked up horus on all the differnet ICU floors, Med surge but the one thatstuck out to me most was the pallaitive unit that is on 4 tower.

I was able to experince nrusing from a pallative PCA point of veiw, some nights I sat and comforted patients that didn’t want to be alone and some nights I had to be there to make sure that I was letting the nurse know when patients expressed that they were in pain. On the sadder nightsI found myself performing post mortem care.

Healthcare Fraud and Abuse

“The five most important Federal fraud and abuse laws that apply to physicians are the False Claims Act (FCA), the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS), the Physician Self-Referral Law (Stark law), the Exclusion Authorities, and the Civil Monetary Penalties Law (CMPL). Government agencies, including the Department of Justice, the Department of Health & Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG), and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), are charged with enforcing these laws. As you begin your career, it is crucial to understand these laws not only because following them is the right thing to do, but also because violating them could result in criminal penalties, civil fines, exclusion from the Federal health care programs, or loss of your medical license from your state medical board” (OIG HHS website, n.d.).

Disease Screenings

A 65-year-old female patient is seen your office for an annual physical examination. The patient states that she has not seen a healthcare provider for the past 10 years because she has been feeling well. She has no past medical or surgical history. She reports no complaints. The patient is new to your practice. You completed a comprehensive history and physical examination on the patient. The patient states that she does not know her family history because she was adopted and never had a chance to meet or speak to her biological families. The history and physical exam are unremarkable.
Discuss the following:
1. Considering the patient age and gender, what preventive health and screenings would you consider for this patient based on the current guidelines?
Based on the patient’s age and gender, several preventive health and screenings that should be considered include:
1. Colorectal cancer screening: The American Cancer Society recommends screening for colorectal cancer beginning at age 45 for individuals with average risk. This can be done through various methods, including fecal occult blood testing, colonoscopy, and stool DNA testing.
2. Breast cancer screening: The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammography screening for women aged 50 to 74 years, with the option for screening to start at age 40. Women with a family history of breast cancer may need earlier or more frequent screening.
3. Cervical cancer screening: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends cervical cancer screening for women aged 21 to 65 years, with Pap tests every three years or Pap tests with HPV testing every five years.
4. Osteoporosis screening: The USPSTF recommends osteoporosis screening for women aged 65 years or older, or for women aged 50 to 64 years with certain risk factors, such as a family history of osteoporosis or a history of fractures.
5. Cardiovascular disease screening: The American Heart Association recommends cardiovascular disease screening for all adults aged 20 years or older at least every four to six years, which may include blood pressure measurement, cholesterol screening, and assessment of lifestyle factors such as smoking and physical activity.
6. Immunizations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend various immunizations for adults aged 65 years or older, including influenza, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccines.
Explanation:
It is important to note that the patient’s individual medical history, risk factors, and preferences should also be taken into account when determining appropriate preventive health and screening measures.

Oil pollution act of 1990

Don’t write the essay too well, aim for 80%, or skip one of the points mentioned below

(Write about the Oil Pollution act of 1990)
For your term paper, you will choose one environmental policy and give a detailed account of how it was shaped and developed over time. This paper will incorporate all that we have studied during the quarter—how an issue comes onto the public agenda, what shape it takes when it becomes policy, how it changes over time, and the branch(es) of government in which this policy is adjudicated.
You may choose a specific law, or you may choose a topic that is a sub-set of a larger issue area (wetlands policy under the Clean Water Act, for example). You may choose a topic that has to do with either pollution control or public lands policy.
Your paper will require outside research; this is not a subject that can be addressed solely through class notes. A good term paper will include:
*a brief history of the issue (how it arose onto the public agenda; reiterating the Downs or McFarland stages is not necessary, although you will likely find them useful for understanding how your policy arose);
*the manner in which it was first addressed (was there a law passed immediately to deal with it, or were other methods of addressing the problem tried first, such as a regulation or court ruling?);
*the various positions for and against the issue as it was being addressed (e.g., perhaps one side wished to address it as a state-level issue, while the other side called for passing a federal law; or, there were some issues that were addressed by the law, but others that were not);
*how the policy was received after passage, including criticisms or praise for its impact and effect, and;
*any subsequent revisions to the law in the period since, including administrative regulations and court rulings.
What you are doing is explaining the life cycle of an environmental policy—why did it take the form that it did? (which touches upon how it first came to be and what was initially included in its provisions); what has changed in the law over time, and why (especially, why did the law change in certain ways and not in others)?
Your paper should have 1” margins on each side and use 1.5 spacing. The font is of your choice, but should be no less than 11-point and no greater than 12-point. Page numbers are required.
The paper should be 12-15 pages in length, with page numbers, text notes (where appropriate) and a bibliography. Any graphs, tables, charts, or other visual representations count toward the page limit, whether they are in the text of the paper or in appendices.
