Written Assignment 4: Tunguska and Chelyabinsk | Graded

For this Week 6 assignment, you will present, in your own words, the importance of the Tunguska and Chelyabinsk meteor events in understanding the threats posed to Earth from large pieces of space debris, along with a discussion of large impact events in Earths history.

Paragraph 1: Research and describe what we know about each event. For example, their locations, impact dates and times, probable impactor sizes, disintegration altitudes, and likely compositions (such as rock, ice, or another composition).

Paragraph 2: Identify three reasons why the data from the Chelyabinsk event is so much better than the data from the Tunguska event.
Paragraph 3: Describe the likely consequences of one of these events happening over a major U.S. city, both in terms of likely physical damage and any potential immediate misunderstandings by the general public about what may have happened. For example, would everyone know it was a random meteor strike and not something else?
Paragraph 4: Earths past events: Large impacts have probably affected the Earth going all the way back to the beginning 4.6 billion years ago. One of the most well-known impacts is the one that caused the extinction of most of the dinosaurs along with many other forms of life. The impact left a large crater (that is now buried) around 65 million years ago located under the Yucatan Peninsula. You can include some information on impacts that have affected the Earth in prehistoric times going all the way back to the origin of the Earth, or you can research a specific impact or discuss impacts in general and how they may have affected life on Earth

Explain why you think the patient presented the symptoms described.

The Assignment (1- to
2-page case study analysis)
Develop a 1- to 2-page case study analysis in
which you:
Explain why you think the patient presented the
symptoms described.
Identify the genes that may be associated with the
development of the disease.
Explain the process of immunosuppression and the effect
it has on body systems.

Scenario 2: A
42-year-old man comes to clinic with chief complaint of pain, redness, and
swelling of his right calf. He states that he had been working in his yard
using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the
wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large
Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed fever to 100.6 F and chills and
noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department
for definitive care.

How does it conflict with the principles we learned in class? Or how is it supported by what we have learned?

Response Section: after the summary text section, write a response to her arguments in a
separate section called Response. In the response, you are to make an argument in favor or against her ideas, using what you have learned in class. Is she making a good argument? What is wrong with her argument? How does it conflict with the principles we learned in class? Or how is it supported by what we have learned? This last section is to be between 500 1000 words.

The whole situation made him phobic of the department and its tasks. What happened? Why did this delegation go wrong? What needed to be done differently?

Here is a scenario to analyze:
A manager delegated the task of receiving, organizing, and posting invoices. The person he delegated to had no idea what went where, no previous experience with anything that had to do with invoices, and he seemed to not be open to questions. He assumed that this employee would have the know how because it was “expressed” that accounting was something he wanted to get into. When this was expressed, he meant he was going to take some classes and would like to help when the time came. However, the manager misunderstood “going to class” as “taken some classes.” I do not know how this miscommunication happened, but it was a mess. Soon after all the facts were sorted through, a person was hired to do the tasks of receiving and posting, but the employee lost his desire to learn about accounting. The whole situation made him phobic of the department and its tasks.
What happened? Why did this delegation go wrong? What needed to be done differently?

Explain how would the theory of self-presentation fit in an online (basically global) environment. Explain your views of the effects of culture on self-presentation and if that effect is diminished in an online environment.

An important phenomenon of self is self-serving bias. We usually think about ourselves favorably; and therefore tend to accept the credit when things go our way and place credit on others when things do not go our way. Self-presentation is another interesting theory. It emphasizes how an individual modifies his or her mannerism, behavior, appearance, and attitude to create a favorable impression on others. As you have learned, self-presentation varies depending on the culture, but what about the online environment? Online learning, shopping, and personal home Web pages are just a few areas where an individual’s presence is viewed.
Compare and contrast self-serving bias and locus of control? Provide an example of a situation in which you encountered an individual (no names) engaged in self-serving bias.
Explain how would the theory of self-presentation fit in an online (basically global) environment. Explain your views of the effects of culture on self-presentation and if that effect is diminished in an online environment.
Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings

Wharton’s “Roman Fever” is a story that has a certain relevance to what we are seeing now–in the backstory, Rome is shut down due to a disease. Be that as it may, the two main characters in the story have an interesting relationship. They are “friends,” but they are also very competitive. What does this “friendship” suggest about the role gender plays in this friendship?

This week, we will be looking at Whitman (poems 11, 12 and 21), Chopin (“The Story of an Hour, The ‘Cadian Ball/The Storm”), Gilman (“The Yellow Wallpaper”), and Wharton (“Roman Fever”). After reading these selections and reflecting on them, I’d like you to respond to these questions:
1. Whitman writes in poem 21 that he is “the poet of the woman same as the man.” Taking this into consideration, how does his description of the bathers, the blacksmith and the butcher support this idea?
2. “The Story of an Hour” uses dramatic irony–we know something about Mrs. Mallard that the characters do not know. How does this impact the end of the story?
3. There are several symbols in “The Story of an Hour.” What are some of these, what do they represent, and how do they drive the plot of the story?
4. “The ‘Cadian Ball” and “The Storm” are really one story–the backstory of Calista and Alcee are found in the first piece, and “The Storm” is set later with the same characters. Do you think Calista is “bad” or “wrong” in what she does in “The Storm?” What might these pieces suggest about love and attraction?
5. Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a little like Hamlet in that it makes us question the narrator’s sanity (although with Hamlet’s character, the question is whether he is faking insanity or if he is really insane). Do you think the narrator in Gilman’s story is “insane?” Why or why not? If she is, what social pressures could have contributed to this?
6. Gilman’s story also contains symbols. Which ones do you see, what do they represent, and what message to they send the reader?

Innovative Strategies

1. Read the article https://hbr.org/2013/01/three-elements-of-a-successful-platform#
(Links to an external site.)
(If HBR articles’ full text inaccessible, go to the library -> online journals, search Harvard Business Review and find it there). Then use its framework (toolbox; magnet e.g. pricing, incentives, reputation systems; matchmaker) to help you analyze a company’s platform strategy and design against one competitor (see below for choices). Some platform strategy/design issues to investigate include value proposition, open or closed platform design, screening criteria, pricing, key partnerships, mechanisms to increase trust, lower transaction cost, and attract and retain users, etc. Please give your educated guess which design is more conducive to growth of the platform and business.
