Diversity and Health Assessments:
May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explainedfrom her observations and her personal experience as a black womanthat many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, Many black women are fat because we want to be (Randall, 2012).In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds. Your Instructor will assign a case study to you for this Discussion.
Randalls statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.
In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds. Your Instructor will assign a case study to you for this Discussion.
To prepare:
Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this weeks Learning Resources on diversity issues in health assessments.
Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient assigned to you.
Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patients background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.
Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you as a nurse employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering pertinent information?
Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

Discussion Directions:
You are required to create a post for this discussion topic (see the
Course Schedule for dates). Your discussion post should incorporate
one content aspect from the assigned material and should incorporate material
from one website research reference. You are required to include a proper
reference citation at the end of the post. The website where you found
the cartoon does not count towards the reference citation requirement.
You may respond to another student’s post, but are not required to do so.
Discussion Format:
The post should be no fewer than 15 sentences, be no more than 25, and should
adhere to proper grammatical and spelling guidelines. If you require
assistance, please utilize the online tool “Grade Results” or the
Writing Lab on campus. Your post’s content should attempt to
conscientiously and accurately contribute to comprehension of the course
material and must include a reference to a relevant website. It may also
refer or respond to an earlier post by another student. Your post must be
original and must not be similar in content to another student’s
post. Please do not attach your post in a separate Word document, but type
it in the box provided instead.

In other words, why do we see such great variation in thoughts, feelings, and actions when biological structures are so similar?
What is the role of the brain?
What are some biological, social, and/or psychological processes that explain similarities and differences within and between persons?
To fully demonstrate content knowledge and critical thinking, the Sensation/Perception and Development discussion must
Appraise course concepts explicitly, applying them to your personal experiences/observations, and cite the required readings as appropriate.
Be thorough and specific, structuring your work intentionally (with an introductory and concluding sentence or two), providing clear context, and concisely and precisely explaining relevant course concepts.
Use personal examples to illustrate as appropriate, but do be sure to provide an objective analysis too, referencing required materials and using additional credible sources as needed to support your insight. For more, see Summary vs. Analysis

Your original post should be a minimum of 300 words.
Peer Responses: Review several of your classmates posts. Provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers in a minimum of 300 words (each reply), by Day 7 (Monday). Based on your understanding of the reading, add important information to the conversation.
How are your experiences similar to or different than those offered by your peers?
How might damage to different parts of the brain impact various processes related to sensation and perception?
Can you offer additional examples of social or cultural differences in childrearing that might impact outcomes?
Instructor Responses: Review any instructor feedback on your postings. Often feedback is shared to help you to elevate your level of critical thought or make corrections. Reply based on this feedback to advance your understanding of the content addressed.
Observe the following guidelines for all responses:
Remember that discussion forums should be conversations; dialogue is encouraged throughout the course.
Provide a courteous and interactive learning environment.
Continue to monitor this discussion through 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7 of the week and reply to anyone (instructor or classmate) who has chosen to respond to your original post.
Your grade will reflect the quality of your initial post, the depth of your peer replies, and your active support of forum dialogue.
Your responses should demonstrate that you have read the existing replies on the board. (In your response, mention information and viewpoints already expressed by existing responses to the same post.)

What does the story suggest about women’s vulnerability in relationships?
Sita Sings the Blues
” Sita Sings the Blues” is a fun, animated film about Rama’s exile and Sita’s rescue. It has a parallel, contemporary story about Nina (the film maker) and her relationship with her boyfriend. Please consider these questions, as they appear on the exam:
What does the story suggest about women’s vulnerability in relationships?
How does the film critique Sita and her responses to Rama?
Why (do you think) Nina Paley — the film maker– received such criticism and even threats from pious Hindus?
