Unit I Research Paper Topic
Weight: 12% of course grade
Grading Rubric
For your first submission, you will need to choose a topic within one of the sixteen chapters in your textbook and write an in-depth research paper on that topic. In Unit I you will submit your research topic with a one-page synopsis detailing the goal of your paper for approval by your instructor.
Note: This is often the most difficult part of the research process. Here are some tips to getting started with your research paper:
Write down multiple research topics and choose which you find most appealing.
Use personal or professional experience to establish a research topic.
Ask your professor for guidance.
Utilize the CSU Online Library and the resident Librarians (for research help).
Peruse your textbook for interesting topics.
Include 2 references you’ll be citing in your paper.
Review the course objectives and see if any spark interest.
Your topic should be at least 1 page, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, with appropriate APA style writing.
Note: Two of the assignments in this course (Unit I Research Paper Topic and the Unit IV Outline) are designed to build upon each other in order to produce a solid final product (the research paper) which will be due in Unit VIII. Consequently, both should be completed and submitted in order to allow for faculty review. A quick submission of these assignments, or submitting them out of order, may not allow the faculty member sufficient time for substantive feedback. This may result in a less than satisfactory grade.

The five dysfunctions of a team assignment
Pick two of the dysfunctions that is described in the book, and reflect on the importance of a leader addressing each specific dysfunction.
Write about how you as a leader would address these dysfunctions (using course material, and material in the textbook). What can leaders do to ensure these dysfunctions are regularly avoided and what can leaders do if they encounter this within the team?
The textbook is the following, and please upload the Turnitin report for me when you are done.
Various short answer biology/anatomy questions
Answer the following questions completely and thoroughly while citing as needed. Just list websites at end of page to cite
– Why does water have a polar covalent bond between the oxygen and two hydrogens? Why is this important to the physical properties of water (e.g., heat retention, solubility, etc.). Explain how water striders (true bugs!) can glide along the surface of the water without breaking the water tension (online research will reveal some very interesting information). Why does a preemie baby have issues with breathing air directly when you don’t? (also interesting online research!)
-How does potential energy differ from kinetic energy (give examples!). What are the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics? How do they affect your physiological reactions? Why are metabolic pathways controlled by multiple enzymes (why not just a single enzyme?). Enzymes are often affected by large changes in pH or temperature, which can lead to denaturation. What is meant by enzyme denaturation? Can enzymes sometimes be renatured? What would have to happen if this could take place?
-Describe in some detail the four stages of cellular respiration (glycolysis, “intermediate stage”, citric acid cycle, electron transport system). How many ATP are produced in each stage? For each sugar undergoing complete oxidation, how many ATP are produced by Glycolysis? In the Intermediate stage? In the citric acid cycle? In the electron transport chain? What’s the total after complete oxidation of one molecule of glucose? What stage of cellular respiration is the “best” at producing the most ATP? Now, do some online research and find out if there is some controversy on how many ATP are actually produced by the oxidation of one molecule of glucose.
-Compare and contrast light microscopy with transmission and scanning electron microscopy. How do photons work in light microscopy? How do electrons work with transmission and scanning electron microscopy? What are the uses of light microscopy? What are the uses of electron microscopy? How are specimens prepared for electron microscopy (internet research here)? Which microscope would you use to observe living cells? Which microscope would you use to see great external detail? Great internal detail?
– What are neurons and glial cells? How do they fit into the nervous system? Identify the most common glial cells and their functions. Are there any amoeba-like glial cells in the brain, and if so, what do they do? What is the ratio of neurons to glial cells in the brain? (internet research).
-List the most significant strata of the epidermis (e.g., stratum corneum, stratum basale, etc.) and give their functions. If the skin is the largest organ in the body, hypothesize why it is so complex.
-Why do humans have as many hair follicles as a bonobo or chimpanzee? Are there any people whose faces are covered with hair like a bonobo? (internet research here).
– Hair buds are epidermal in origin but during their development they sink into the dermis, forming a follicle—just like the development of scales in reptiles and feathers in birds. All of these structures are made of keratin. Why should this be so and why should they form in exactly the same way? What are the functions of mammalian hair?

HR Challenge A: Learning in the Flow of Work
HR
Challenge A: Learning in the Flow of Work
Overview:
3 pages (825 words)
At least 4 SCHOLARLY sources from peer-reviewed journal. (Any listed sources
can be used.)
APA6. (Any of the listed sources can be used.)
·
Write a 3 page INTERNAL MEMO that
will be presented to the company leadership team as they make the decision
whether or not the proposed software supports the company goal of increasing
learning in the flow of work.
·
Today, the workforce has many learning
needs that must be responded to without pre-planning, and adjustment times are
quick. In the early tenure of an employee, or when the work task is new, the
employee will need an ecosystem of learning strategies and products to
facilitate learning in the flow of work. The ecosystem could include micro
learning, on the job practice, learner developed videos, coaching, or other
modalities. Learning in the flow of work is the process of using different
activities throughout the workday to learn new skills to respond to task
demands (Bersin, 2018).
·
There are thousands of technology-based
learning platforms and vast amounts of content in many different formats. One
way in which organizations can be successful in selecting the effective
learning processes is by using different theories of learning and applying
critical success factors (CSFs) when selecting mechanisms of learning. Theories
of adult learning include: andragogy, which exploits a learner’s past
experiences (Arghode, 2017); transformational learning, which makes connections
between ideas and concepts (Yukawa, 2015), and experiential learning that
connects meaning to reality (Human Resource Management International Digest,
2016).
·
Critical success factors can be used to
determine best practices for the selection of learning platforms. CSFs provide
facilitators to overcome internal organizational political and social barriers
to learning (Bizcommunity.com, 2019).
·
CSFs that focus on process:
o
Align to goals and design for impact.
o
Work from a foundation of solid methodology.
o
Monitor and ask for feedback from the
start.
o
Integrate learning into the flow of work
and ensure application.
o
Work cleverly within budget and resource
considerations.
·
CSFs that can overcome social and
political barriers:
o
Have internal champions.
o
Choose the right partners.
o
Capture interest and attention.
o
Make it a successful brand exercise.
·
HR Challenge
o
Your task is to identify which of the
critical success factors and learning theories will be used with the
implementation of new software. Also recommend whether or not the proposed
software supports the company goal of increasing learning in the flow of work.
Pick at least three critical success factors and one of three theories.
o
You work for a customer service
organization that serves and tracks vendor needs for materials that are sold to
other companies for resale. The company’s sales representatives give advice and
recommendations based on cost and the buyers’ needs. They have to have a
working knowledge of customer expectations, needs, and the customer companies’
operations. Your organization wants software that will provide the sales reps with
data on items and costs while they are on the phone with the customer. The
company has a tradition of being very cost-conscious and is not usually the
first to buy new technology.
o
The software application that has been
proposed for use by the sales representatives has the following
characteristics:
§ Database
capability for all catalog items plus 500 gigabytes of unused storage.
§ Same
or similar content layout no matter what device—desktops, tablets, and phones.
§ Training
modules that can be accessed from the website for the software application,
range in length from 20–30 minutes each.
§ Microlearning
lessons (3–5 minutes each) accessed from within the application.
§ Pop-up
help messages within the application with helpful information about many
functions. Can be turned on and off.
§ Frequently
Asked Questions/Resource documents are searchable within the software for
step-by-step instructions.
§ Individualized
reporting of application usage, average time per transaction, and training
materials accessed weekly or monthly.
o
As an HR generalist, you also have
learning and development responsibilities. To assist in the decision to
purchase software, you have identified the learning tools included with the
software as well as some general sales-related learning needs of the sales
representatives who will be expected to begin using the system as soon as it is
installed.
·
·
Write a 3 page internal memo that will be
presented to the company leadership team as they make the decision whether or
not the proposed software supports the company goal of increasing learning in
the flow of work.
o
Listen to Josh Bersin’s presentation
Learning in the flow of work, keynote speech [Video].
o
Read the following article:
§ Bizcommunity.com.
(2019). Implementing a learning project: 9 key considerations for success.
SyndiGate Media Inc.
o
Write an internal memo for leadership
about their decision to invest in software at this time. Include the following
in your memo:
§ Format
the memo using To, From, RE(reason), and a title.
§ Explain
how the characteristics of the sales software application (listed above) will
facilitate learning in the flow of work.
§ Identify
which 3–5 of the critical success factors will be met with the implementation
of new software for your company.
§ Explain
a reason why each critical success factor was selected and how the success
factor will influence the implementation of the new software at your company.
§ Identify
which of the three learning theories you will use to help sales representatives
learn the software application and why.
Evaluate
and recommend whether or not the proposed software supports the company goal of
increasing learning in the flow of work, including the rationale for your
recommendation, based on the critical success factors you selected.

Write: A short MLA paper on the stories this week, 900-1200 words . See the Assignment below for details. (Don’t stress: Just think of it as a regular Discussion post with one paragraph per story.)
Journal: 1-2 full scenes for your story. You will share one scene in your Discussion.
Discussion: Post your MLA paper and one scene of your story-in progress. You will also comment on two other students’ work.
Module Discussion
Discussion Board: Post your MLA formatted paper of the readings to the Discussion Board tool and post a minimum of two responses to other student postings.
In an MLA formatted paper, identify the religious, ethnic, and historic context of each story and comment on how one character reacts to it. In other words, how does the individual conforms to or accepts or re-invents their relation to religion in an ethnic and historic context? Write one paragraph for each story. You must support and illustrate your ideas with specific details from the stories. Paraphrase and include short quotes. Include page numbers after quotes. 900–1200 words.
You will not be graded on whether or not you have chosen what I may think is the “correct” worldview of each story, but rather on how well you support your argument, how deeply you interpret the material, and the originality of your response. Your paper should not sound like the others or use the same evidence from the texts. The art of the short story is to allow for many interpretations from close readings.
