Discussion Prompt
Please make sure to use specific examples from the course materials throughout your response, and cite all of your sources. Parts 2) and 3) deserve more substantial attention and length that 1), though 1) still matters of course!
Your geographical imagination: Close your eyes and think about ‘South Asia’ for 30 seconds. Outline the key images and thoughts that come to mind, as well as what forces/people/activities/etc., helped influence and form these ideas in your mind (if indeed you had some!) before you took Geog 340.
Geographical imagination & reality: Write about a preconception about all of South Asia, or a specific country in South Asia, you had that THE TEXTBOOK shed light on for you. Perhaps your preconception was a misconception, and you were surprised by the textbook. Or perhaps the textbook clarified or added specificity to an accurate preconception you had. Explain a) your preconception b) what you think the source of that preconception was, and c) how the textbook affected it, citing relevant pages.
Watch Stephen Young’s case study (‘Microfinance Markets and Inequality in India’) very closely. How did privatizing microloans have an effect on gender roles in this case? Do you think it is fair that banks and investment funds can make a profit by using microfinance institutions to lend to people who earn $2/day or less?

World Regions in Global Context: Southeast Asia
Discussion Prompt
For this discussion, you will consider global interconnections, environmental change and uneven development. Make sure to use specific examples from the course materials throughout your response. Make sure to cite all of your sources. Since there are several sub-questions, make sure to be especially concise. For this discussion assignment, we ask you to select an example of environmental problem that is discussed from in textbook Chapter 10. Before deciding upon your example, please read through all of the questions in this prompt to make sure that the example you decide on will allow you to sufficiently answer the questions. You may do some additional outside research to bolster your response, but the example must be from the textbook.
CAUSES OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS: Think about both i) the Mekong River case study and movie AND ii) the example you are using from the textbook. What are the causes of these problems? In what ways are the causes of the problems similar or different?
[Questions to get you thinking: Are the problems the result of local resource use? Of global resource demand? What is the history that led to these problems? Does everyone consider these to be “problems”? Who does, who doesn’t, and why?]
MARGINALIZED POPULATIONS: Environmental problems are also human problems. Marginalized peoples, including minority and indigenous populations, are often affected by such problems. Who are some of the marginalized peoples in SE Asia that are discussed in the course materials? In what ways are they marginalized (i.e. what are the historical, geographical and/or environmental reasons that they can be considered marginalized)? Please discuss at least two different groups.
POWER AND ENVIRONMENTAL BURDENS/BENEFITS: Think about the environmental problems and the marginal groups you identified in Parts 1 & 2. In these examples, do you see any connection between the marginality of the groups and region’s environmental problems?
Questions to get you thinking: Does a group’s marginality impede its ability to protest or effectively fight to solve the environmental problem? Are environmental problems affecting marginalized groups the same way they affect other groups? How economically and/or politically powerful is the group? How does that power matter when you consider the environmental problem? It is more important to explain a few examples clearly and thoroughly than to include many different examples. Note that answering this question will likely require you to independently make connections between different sources.]
Computer Fire Modeling using Pyrosim
Please watch the recording on Pyrosim through this link: https://us-lti.bbcollab.com/collab/ui/session/playback
If you have issues with the link please message me.
Do your own research and find out besides smoke movement and temperature
profiles, what other information can be obtained from the Pyrosim program that
runs FDS. Think of the applications that this can be used for. An example is egress.
Use two sources while referring to the video to talk about the subject. Discuss the topic in two full pages pretty simple.
World Regions in Global Context: Latin America and the Caribbean
Discussion Prompt
For this discussion, you will consider environmental decline, uneven development, and identity formation. Make sure to cite all of your sources
Cite and briefly describe one fascinating (to you) example of contemporary environmental decline you encountered in the region via the course materials (especially the course text and one of two case studies by Lisa Naughton or Erika Marín-Spiotta):
What are the key causes of the environmental degradation you described?
In which ways are uneven development visible along the 5,000 mile (8,000 km) route through South America that the two main characters of The Motorcyle Diaries pass through?
With respect to The Motorcyle Diaries as well as your own experiences to-date, does travel and engagement with different geographies and new types of people lead to value shifts and new perspectives on the taken-for-granted of life? Briefly discuss.
You do not need to include a reference list if you are just using Module 10 course materials. Just make sure to include an author or title reference in the text of your response. It can look something like this:
“In her case study, Prof. Marín-Spiotta explained that . . .”
“In the article, ‘From sleepy town . . .,’ the author described the changes that . . .”
or this:
“When Niehuis (2015) described that particular problem . . .”
“. . . and that was why such a characterization was problematic (Smith 2016).

Following a close listen to the podcast Q&A with one of our Geography students, Danya Al-Saleh:
What does Danya have to say about the way her identity may shift depending on the context in which she is functioning?
What does Danya have to say about the things that are unique about the MENA region? To what degree does she see it as a coherent region?
Do you have any thoughts/reflections about the issue of language acquisition and navigating through world regions, including MENA, after listening to this podcast?
Quick gut instinct question (AFTER you have read the assigned chapter and engaged with the module materials):
Which country in the MENA region would you most want to spend a term studying abroad in, and why? Feel free to be brief but do let us all know what’s driving your curiosity/interest. Thx!

Crime and masculinity
In the words of James Messerschmidt,
“masculinity challenges arise from interactional
threats and insults from peers, teachers, parents,
and from situationally defined masculine
expectations that are not achievable. Both, in
various ways, proclaim a man or boy
subordinate in contextually defined masculine
terms… Masculinity challenges may motivate
social action towards masculine resources (e.g.,
bullying, fighting) that correct the subordinating
social situation, and various forms of crime can
be the result” (quoted in Rios 2011: 128-129).
Please explain how the boys discussed
in Punished respond to “masculinity challenges,
and how this provides them opportunities to
exercise agency and claim identity, while also
leading to their further criminalization and
stigmatization. Please provide at least two
examples from chapter 6 of the book to explain
your ideas.
