In providing your case study assessment, you can Organize your paper with the following sections and be sure to answer all questions in each section:
1) Incident summary – with specific discussion of the underlying hazard itself
What is the hazard? What are its characteristics?
Which community does it influence?
What tangible or intangible, direct or indirect effects does it have on the community?
2) Contributing factors to the incident being examined
What hazard-specific human and physical factors that contribute to the occurrence of the hazard?
Which social groups or community members are most vulnerable to the hazard?
Which economic, social, political, environment, geographic factors increase the community’s vulnerability (or disaster risks in general) to the hazard?
3) Assessment of any relevant DRR policies and practices
What is the local government’s preparedness situation to this hazard? What does the local government do to prepare the community for the hazard? Does it send out warning in time? Does it have a plan in place?
What is the protection strategy to reduce disaster risks? Does the local government use any structural measure to reduce the hazard risks? If yes, which specific structural measures do local government take?
What is the “mitigation” strategy to reduce disaster risks? Has the local government used the financial measures to reduce the disaster risk? If yes, which specific financial measures does local government take?
What is the adaptation strategy to reduce disaster risks? Does the local government use any regulatory measure to reduce the hazard risks? If yes, which specific adaptation measures does local government take?
4) Identification of strategies for future disaster risk reduction
Based on the readings for this class, what advice would you give to this community to further reduce their risks to the specific hazard?
Specifically, what other disaster risk management measures could be adopted to further reduce the disaster risks?
What might be the challenges for the community to implement your proposed disaster risk management measure?

Discuss as objectively as possible each media source individually/one at a time.

The assignment’s objective is to examine how three specific, different news media sources of any type (as long as they are “reputable” and recognized as such) cover and address a specific issue or event that falls within the parameters of the course-wide topic.
You want to look at how partisan mindsets impact news coverage by looking at a “liberal” media outlet, a “conservative” media outlet, and a non-partisan media outlet. For this, it will be important that you are able to back up your claims regarding the slants of those new sources.
My focus regarding this chosen topic is Covid-19 and focusing on schools/closing
Introduction: The paper should open with an introduction of the topic being addressed, as well as identify the three specific media sources under examination. This should be around 3/4 of a page long.

Organizing Body Paragraphs: The easiest approach is to focus on and discuss as objectively as possible each media source individually/one at a time. Think about writing a minimum of one page per news source – so that you can meet the minimum page requirements. You will need to introduce the title of the article/news media source and the date it was published at the beginning of the body paragraph.

For example, if I’m using CNN, Fox News, and NPR as my 3 news media outlets, I will then organize my paper by writing a body paragraph on CNN, a body paragraph on Fox News, and a body paragraph on NPR.

Evidence: Within the paragraph on the news source, you will summarize what was said and also provide quotes from the news source. Like you have practiced all semester, you will be asked to integrate textual evidence from each source by engaging with a minimum of 2 quotes per news source. By using direct quotes, you can show me as your reader what was reported on the topic. These quotes can not be longer than 4 sentences, and must include proper MLA in-text citations.

Analysis: At the end of each body paragraph, you will provide a commentary on any perceived slants or biases that may exist in the manner in which each media source reports or discusses the topic, engages with sensational or subjective headlines, and/or uses images that might impact/persuade the reader/viewer. Make sure you explain why you view the reporting slanted or biased. If you believe there is nothing slanted or biased, you also need to explain why you have that stance.

Conclusion: After examining and commenting on how each source delivers its/their message, and what type of bias exists (if one does at all), then the paper should end with a conclusion-based-commentary where you get to tell me your personal perspective/opinion on the paper’s topic/issue of discussion. Where do you stand on the issue? This should be a minimum of a half page, no more than 1 page long.

Page Requirement: This project must be a minimum of 5-7 pages, plus a Works Cited. Your Works Cited will include URL links or directions of how to access each source under examination. If radio or television sources are used that cannot be accessed any other way, then notes about the program’s date, network, quotes you gathered, etc., should be attached.
Introduction: The paper should open with an introduction of the topic/event being addressed, as well as identify the three specific news media sources under examination. This should be around 3/4 of a page long.
News Media Sources: You will need to include 3 of your news media sources in this first draft. I will be looking for a minimum of 1 page per source so I can tell you are on the right path for your analysis. In these sections you will need to include:
The title of the article/news media source, the date it was published at the beginning of the body paragraph, as wells as telling me the journalists who published it.

Remember, to discuss as objectively as possible each news media source’s reporting of the topic.

Within each section, use a minimum of 2 quotes from the source, plus engage with in-text citations.

Label the parts of the paragraph appropriately by placing the letters (M, E, A, L) before the respective parts. The summary should be in your own words and should not include quotes. The summary should capture the key ideas presented in the original text, focusing less on the details. This skill will be important for you when you create your project charter, which must be written professionally, yet succinctly.
Your summary will be graded using the following scoring guide criteria:
Summarize a passage with appropriate structure as shown in the MEAL Plan.
Produce text with minimal grammar, usage, spelling, and mechanical errors.

What tools, technologies, systems, or resources are available to support the function or activity?

The profession of emergency management has advanced considerably in the past 30 years as the role of the emergency manager at all jurisdictional levels has become more established. Additionally, the systems that have been developed to manage emergencies and disasters both before and after they occur have improved. This advancement is the result of a number of factors, the most significant of which are increased understanding of the field by policymakers (who provided the necessary political and financial support to grow the profession and governmental capability), the learning and sharing of lessons from each subsequent disaster, and introduction of research and technology to allow for greater risk and hazard management.
For this assignment, you will be investigating how an emergency management function has improved or has evolved. Examples include such things as coordination, search and rescue, planning, logistics, mass care, and others.
Through this assignment, you will examine and present the following:
A detailed description or background on the function or activity.
How the function or activity supports effective emergency management (look at all phases of emergency management, namely preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery).
How the function or activity has evolved, and as a result of what events or events this has occurred?
What tools, technologies, systems, or resources are available to support the function or activity?
What individual competencies are required to provide the functional support or to conduct the activity?
What improvements are likely to occur in the future with regards to the function or activity?
You should use a minimum of five (5) professional sources to support your analysis.
Papers should be submitted as a Word document (.doc or .docx) or an Adobe PDF file (.pdf).
Papers should typed, double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, or other comparable font with 1 inch margins.
Papers should be five to eight (5-8) pages in length. Papers exceeding the page requirement may lose points.
Papers should incorporate a minimum of five (5) professional sources, contain in-text citations, and include a reference list in APA format.
All written assignments should be spellchecked and proofread.
