Establishing Character (400-600 word essay)
For this exercise, you will take on the role of a production designer (and screenwriter), constructing a fictional character through describing the mise en scene of their bedroom. Who is this bedroom’s inhabitant? What do we know about them based on this space? Your description of the mise en scene will need to communicate this to the film crew who will shoot the project and to the audience who will see the completed film.
Do not tell us anything about this character or their physical traits–only describe their room. Don’t tell us their name, their hair color, their voice, etc. Your classmates/TA/professor will need to be able to surmise who this person is by virtue of the mise en scene. Through your description, the reader should be able to have a very good picture of this person’s identity, personality, and maybe even goals, life story, etc.
You should create your own fictional movie character (not one from an existing film). Do not describe your own bedroom. You’ll need to negotiate:
The character’s individual identity. Are they extremely tidy? Messy? Does this trait exist in friction with the usual associations viewers might have with setting (e.g., a grossly messy, beautiful, affluent suburban home, or an extremely luxurious dorm room)? What can you tell about their job from their room (student, priest, artist)?
Their place within larger social and cultural structures. Is this space specific to a country or region? Urban or rural? Are there particular cultural markers? How would you create an environment that’s recognizable to an audience, while avoiding stereotypes? Keep in mind Shohat’s contention that ethnicities in film are ubiquitous, if often submerged. You may specify the location, or instead give hints for the audience to determine the location.
The genre of the work this set would appear in. Is this science fiction? If so, what kind (space opera, art film)? Is it a gritty, realist portrayal of New York City life?
Time period. When are we? New York in the mid-1970s would be very different from New York in the late 1980s, for example.
Issues around stardom and casting. Who do you see playing this role? A known, unknown, or non-professional actor? Are you casting according to type? Against type? A performer at the height of their fame, or someone whose fame has faded, but who evokes a particular meaning for the film (e.g., John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Winona Ryder in Stranger Things—see this Flavorwire article on “nostalgia casting (Links to an external site.):”).

Directions: For each of the four sources you found in the previous assignment (i.e. two sources on each of the short stories you have chosen), do the following
STEP 1) Summarize
For each article, write a paragraph that summarizes the author’s ideas about the story or its author. In some case, you may not need to summarize the entire article, but only the section that deals with your story.
STEP 2) Reaction
Find at least two statements within each article (eight statements in total) that make a notable or interesting point. For each statement, provide an exact quote from the article, followed by a page citation. Then explain, in at least a few sentences, how each statement does one of three things:
a) Supports a point that you plan to make in your paper
b) Makes a point that contradicts a point you plan to make in your paper
c) Offers a point that you had not considered.

Use of 4-6 primary sources and 2 or more secondary, scholarly sources [only one may be an encyclopedia or a textbook], listed in an approved works cited and in-text citation format [APA, MLA, CMS are all acceptable].Use primary sources (from your book, the course, or archives like the LOC [Library of Congress] and online digital libraries, like JSTOR, Lexus/Nexus, Ebsco-Host and the Gale Network , as these libraries are most likely to have quality, scholarly sources. I encourage you to use JSTOR. When in doubt: come ask me. You may obtain all of your sources from JSTOR if they are scholarly articles. Do NOT use history.com, wikipedia, etc. (You may read those to get an overall grasp of a topic, but they should not be used as sources in your essay. Wikepedia often does have a great list of linked sources at the bottom of their page though, which may be used if you read them and they are either primary or scholarly sources.)
Proper documentation of information with appropriate citations throughout text.
Proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar throughout the paper, written in an academic style. We all make mistakes, but do your best to catch any errors. Reading your work out loud helps with this.
A title page consisting of: title of paper, student’s name, class name and crn [or day/time of class], instructor’s name, and date of submission. MLA, however, does not require a title page, although it requires a title. Pictures and style are at writer’s discretion. Your title should reflect your thesis and catch the attention of the reader.

Studies suggest that decades of downsizing have lowered organizational commitment levels. Assume you are a manager in a company that has recently downsized or had to shut your normal operations due to COVID-19. You realize this step had to be taken in order to keep the company afloat. Hello,

This actually happened to my husband during the start of the pandemic. Enterprise Rent a Car laid off many of their top executives or if two people were in the position, they would just leave one person in that position going forward. These laid-offs came in waves and many of the employees were left fearful of what would happen to their careers or where their position in the company would land. Until word got around what Enterprise was doing for those that they had to lay off. One thing Enterprise Rent a Car did right was given big incentives if they did lay you off by offering big payouts that helped many employees live off for several months before putting that individual in a bind. This definitely helped with the mentality of the employees that if you did get laid off, the company would make sure to do it in a way where they actually care about that person’s lively hood instead of putting them out on the streets.

In this sense it is not a traditional research paper as you will be weaving in your own thoughts, experiences and understanding of the topic chosen. Assignment #2: Evaluating Media
For this assignment, students will write an evaluative essay comparing two media. You’ll use the short story “The bear came over the mountain” (Munro, 2013) and the film Away from Her (Egoyan et al., 2006). You will begin working on this assignment (reading, viewing, drafting) in Unit four, but submit the initial draft of the paper in Unit Five.
You will evaluate two main components:
Does the film accurately depict the short story?
Do the film and the short story accurately portray Alzheimer’s?
Provide evidence from both the film and the story.
For this essay, the short story is the source material. You are going to evaluate how well the film stands up to the short story. First, you must establish the criteria. What makes the short story successful? You want to think about this very carefully as you read and make notes. Notice elements of plot, structure, character, and point of view. You’ll write about these in the first section of your paper.
This essay should:
have specific criteria, using the short story as source material
use that criterion to make judgments about the film
support the judgment with evidence from the text and film
be 1000 words long
have an explicit thesis statement, with the main idea (the topic of the paper) and a controlling idea (what you, as the author, is saying about the topic)
In this case, we’re making a judgment, and that should be included in the thesis. Remember — this judgment is not about the film or text is good or bad. It’s about whether or not the film lives up to the criteria established in the short story.
