MID-TERM EXAMINATION
Spring 2022 (MW 3)
CRJ 102: Crime and Punishment
Read each question carefully and completely before you start answering. The amount of information you present is not as important as the quality of what you present. Remember, this is an essay (not a short answer) examination, therefore collegiate quality essays are expected. Well thought out and constructed, clear, articulate, and insightful responses are more likely to receive favorable evaluation. Three (3) responses are required, and all answers will be equally weighted. Submit your responses via e-mail (dokada@csus.edu), by Monday, March 28, at 11:59pm (2359 hours). Responses received after that time will not be accepted. Good luck, I have every confidence that you will do well. Be safe, try and be healthy. Hope your Spring Break was rejuvenating.
Mandatory Question (all respondents MUST answer this question)
1. Judicial reform became widespread in the 1700s led by what is now known as the Classical School of Criminal Law. While this Classical School was not a theory constructing movement, some contemporary explanations are based on its fundamental principles. However, it was specifically a political-cultural paradigm that generated thoughtful assessments of crime, those who became criminals, and what to do with them once they did. The principles that framed this movement ultimately gave rise to what is now the American criminal justice system. Assess and discuss the Classical School by identifying the contributors, what they contributed, and then how this perspective influenced the American practice of criminal justice, or did it? Explain.
Option Questions (answer ANY 2 of the following):
2. Various theory construction models were presented offering visual depictions of the process involved in creating reasonable explanations of crime and criminal behavior. Select any one of the models presented in class, describe it, and explain the process of how a theory of crime is developed based on it. Use a criminal justice related example to illustrate your understanding. Be comprehensive and clear. Explain.
3. A discussion of morality/ethics was presented suggesting that humans may possess basic beliefs that guide their social behavior. Provide a discussion of this consideration. Are there things you would or would not do because of your sense of morality/ethics? Would you ever violate your own beliefs? Why? Discuss.
4. Much was said about the so-called ‘science v society’ debate. (A way of thinking of this is could be the difference between criminology v criminal justice.) What is the role of science; what is the role of society? What are the basic considerations/points-of- view of each ‘side’? Since each complements and informs the other, why might there be any sort of conflict between them? What is the substance of this debate? Be insightful. Discuss.
5. Micro-analysis theories, as compared to macro-level theories, of criminal behavior explain conditions under which individuals have little to no control. One of the foundations of criminological understanding comes from human biology. Provide a discussion of this perspective and offer either support or refutation of its principles, insuring that you include enough information to demonstrate your knowledge of its basic precepts. Be critical and insightful. Discuss.
6. The world of psychology has produced scholarship focused on the acquisition, process, and outcome of brain development and the way and how we think. Our personalities, ability to understand, and even our sense of morality is based on our psychology. Discuss the basic elements of this perspective and whether or not you believe it is a useful tool to understand criminal behavior. Provide an argument in support of this endeavor.

NOTE: If there is a topic you wish to pursue that is not on this list, please okay it with me, first, because I won’t grade papers not on the provided topics unless I have approved it.
Regardless of which topic you choose, the paper is a critical analysis, meaning you need to formulate a thesis statement relevant to your topic, pull examples and quotes from the text that support your case, and fully explain yourself. In addition, this paper will require you to use some outside material. You should find and use material from TWO different sources in this paper, and those critical essays must come from one of the CSI databases. Your research should be very narrowly focused on material you can bring to support what you think. Given the paper is 5-7 pages, no more than two outside sources should be used, since I want to really see you develop your own critical insights.
