Poem
The Little Black Boy
BY WILLIAM BLAKE
My mother bore me in the southern wild,
And I am black, but O! my soul is white;
White as an angel is the English child:
But I am black as if bereav’d of light.

My mother taught me underneath a tree
And sitting down before the heat of day,
She took me on her lap and kissed me,
And pointing to the east began to say.

Look on the rising sun: there God does live
And gives his light, and gives his heat away.
And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive
Comfort in morning joy in the noonday.

And we are put on earth a little space,
That we may learn to bear the beams of love,
And these black bodies and this sun-burnt face
Is but a cloud, and like a shady grove.

For when our souls have learn’d the heat to bear
The cloud will vanish we shall hear his voice.
Saying: come out from the grove my love & care,
And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice.

Thus did my mother say and kissed me,
And thus I say to little English boy.
When I from black and he from white cloud free,
And round the tent of God like lambs we joy:

Ill shade him from the heat till he can bear,
To lean in joy upon our fathers knee.
And then I’ll stand and stroke his silver hair,
And be like him and he will then love me.

What makes your school most different from the standard public school?

DESIGNING MY CHARTER SCHOOL

Instructions: Read the introductory paragraph below. Then, write a two-page paper addressing the questions below. Upload your paper here. Also upload it as an attachment in this week’s discussion.

Charter schools are a relatively new concept in American education. Groups of parents band together and establish schools that they believe will better meet the needs of their children. They draw up a charter that includes goals and objectives and a design for their school. If it meets the required specifications, tax dollars are diverted to those schools. They usually are cheaper per student than standard schools, even though they are required to have certified teachers, or at least have their curriculum approved and supervised by certified teachers.

SO, if you were one of those parents designing a charter school, what would your number one goal be? (Goals are big, long-range aims that may never be fully reached.) Some examples might be: “Every student would learn to think creatively and problem solve.” “Every student would be prepared for college or a career.” “Every student would be productive citizens with a concern for social justice.”

What would your school be like? (Remember, it needs to fit with your goal.

Where would it be?

What would it look like?

What would some of the classes be for the elementary age students?

What would some of the classes be for the middle school age students?

What would some of the classes be for the high school age students?

What kind of people would you hire to be teachers?

What makes your school most different from the standard public school?

The methodology section is one of the most important sections of your research project. This section will describe what you plan to accomplish and how you are going to do it. The methods section should contain the following:

Population (who will you be studying, ex: age, race, social class, males, females, college students, etc.)
Sample (of the population you intend to study, ex: female college students @ PV)
Data Collection- describe the tools and methods you will use to collect information and identify the independent and dependent variables
(Example independent variable: media use; example dependent variable: aggressive behaviors)
Tools and Methods: participant observation, content analysis, one-on-one interviews, group interviews, surveys, historical/comparative, secondary data analysis
Data Analysis- how will you analyze the data? Will you use a software program like SPSS, will you transcribe and code the interviews in order to run a regression analysis, etc.)
Copy of the survey and/or interview questions or secondary data source you plan to utilize
Any limitations of your chosen method(s)?

Adopting a Chase Strategy Debate

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, read sections 13.1–13.3 in Chapter 13 of the required textbook, Operations and Supply Chain Management.
Chase strategy refers to the concept that you are chasing the demand set by the market. Production is set to match demand and does not carry any leftover products. This is a lean production strategy, saving on costs until the demand (the order) is placed. Inventory costs are low, and the cost of goods for products sold is kept to a minimum and for a shorter length of time.
The chase strategy is used in the industries that must contend with perishables or with a company that does not have a lot of extra cash on hand to handle the added risks of unsold products. The production schedule is based on orders and immediate demand.
By varying production or services to meet demand, the lean approach of inventory management has lower inventory levels and reduced labor cost.
For example, an airline call center has varying demand—higher calls during summer months and major holidays. Inaccurate forecasts can cause havoc concerning staff capacity and scheduling decisions. In some situations, equipment capacity may not be adequate during periods of peak demand.
For this discussion, decide to be for or against adopting a chase strategy for a major airline call center. Provide a research-based rational for your decision.
Your initial response should be a minimum of 200 words. Graduate school students learn to assess the perspectives of several scholars. Support your response with at least one scholarly or credible source in addition to the text.

Describe one contemporary issue Indigenous peoples in Canada we learned about this semester, and explain how one historical event is connected and even caused the problem?

The final quiz is a short answer question. You will need to write between 500-600 words. You MUST post your answer in the space below. This quiz tests your understanding of all the material we have studied to date, and asks you to provide analysis of the history and ideas we have discussed – drawing on themes, events, and issues throughout the course.
Read the questions listed below. Select only ONE to answer. You must clearly articulate an argument to demonstrate your knowledge of the course. Remember, the argument needs the information from the course. For example, if you are arguing we need to learn about a specific issue, you need to use course material to demonstrate why. Describe specifics avoid being too general or vague.
Again to complete the quiz successfully and avoid an NP you must post your answer in the space below. Once you submit, you will not be able to go back and change your response.
You do not need citations. This is a short answer quiz. All you need is the body of this short answer.
Responses are due April 6th at 8pm. Once the quiz closes I will not accept any further submissions.

QUESTIONS: Choose ONE question from the three below.
1. Describe one contemporary issue Indigenous peoples in Canada we learned about this semester, and explain how one historical event is connected and even caused the problem?
2. Explain how the role of women has changed. And, explain what you think it will take for women to regain their former position within their communities and the country?
3. What is one government policy that has had tremendous ripples effects even today. Why do all people in Canada need to know about this policy?

The Alchemist/write an essay to argue your opinion about the importance of “home” and discovering one’s purpose. You must address and develop claims and counterclaims fairly and thoroughly, providing relevant evidence for each.

Can you pleases use this thesis provided down below. Also the book this is about is “The Alchemist”

“ I believe the significance of having a home is that it provides security, control, belonging, identity, privacy, it also gives us a sense of mind. There aren’t many if any place that can provide this kind of peace, love and security in one’s life. The importance of knowing your purpose in life helps you live life with integrity. People who know their purpose in life know who they are, what they are, and why they are. When you know yourself, it becomes easier to live a life that’s true to your core values.”

Using the question and sources developed from the research over the course of this quarter and
your understanding of The Alchemist, write an essay to argue your opinion about the
importance of “home” and discovering one’s purpose. You must address and develop claims
and counterclaims fairly and thoroughly, providing relevant evidence for each.

Introduction
Despite advances in general awareness about societal inequality, oppression, and racism there remains an unacceptable level of prejudice and discrimination within every level of the structures of our communities. There has been a significant amount of research completed within the social sciences regarding this topic, however it has focused mainly on individual biases and the effects of interventions designed to address those biases. This research has demonstrated limited outcomes regarding changes in prejudice and discrimination within participants thus leading to the following conclusions: 1). Addressing individual level factors regarding prejudice and discrimination is not sufficient to provide lasting individual change and 2). The failure of the existing research to address the root of prejudice and discrimination has not had the positive societal impact which it could have, as evidenced by the continuing prejudice and discrimination still occurring today. Investigating the effects of using a multi-faceted and multi-disciplinary approach to eradicating prejudice and discrimination is a novel idea within social sciences research however it would lead researchers to better understanding the types of interventions required in order to result in lasting change and the emergence of an equal society.

In the first empirical study of its kind, Cadenas et al., (2018) examined the effects of an intervention called DREAMzone, a 4-hour workshop designed specifically decrease bias of university students towards undocumented immigrants. The intervention includes an educational component as well as exposure to, or contact with, undocumented immigrants. The results of the study show positive outcomes and provide support for the assertion that multi-faceted approaches to reduce prejudice and discrimination are worthy of further exploration.

Devine et al., (2012) offer insight into the ongoing prevalence of racial disparities and summarize several strategies which had been previously studied in efforts to reduce biases and prejudice. The researchers suggest that “one-shot strategies” (p. 1266) may not be long-lasting or effective in reducing bias. At the time the paper was written (2012) the researchers had specified that there had not been any studies conducted to test interventions designed to product long-lasting and meaningful attitudinal changes. The results from this study support the basis of this proposal in that interventions with a singular focus may not provide enough change to provide lasting changes within the population.
Er-rafiy, A., and Brauer, M. (2013). Modifying perceived variability: four laboratory and field experiments show the effectiveness of a ready-to-be-used prejudice intervention. Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Vol. 43, Issue 4, pp. 840-853.
Er-rafiy and Brauer drew attention to a gap in existing research related to stereotypes. As per their work, this gap consists of the lack of field experimentation and the need for an intervention that can be reasonably applied within societal settings. Their subsequent research thus incorporates specific elements related to both gaps which adds to the scope of the research anticipated within this proposal. Consistent results found within three experimental conditions demonstrate that even slight exposure to anti-prejudice tools alters perception to some degree. This indicates that further research is required in order to test interventions with a more in-depth focus.
Okun, T. (2021). White Supremacy Culture – Still Here. www.whitesupremacyculture.info.
Dr. Tema Okun is an educator and author who facilitates several educational initiatives regarding the topic of white supremacy, one of which is a document which outlines the concept of white supremacy, how it shows up daily, intersectionality of white supremacy, and the conditions of conditioning and colonization that fall within the concept. Within the website and the document, Okun elaborates on the characteristics of white supremacy, how these characteristics can be identified, and the antidotes for them. This source adds context to the roots of prejudice and discrimination and supports the assertion that to create interventions with lasting outcomes, research must probe far deeper than surface level and individual focused strategies.
Phillips, N. L., Adams, G., & Salter, P. S. (2015). Beyond adaptation: Decolonizing approaches to coping with oppression. In Journal of Social and Political Psychology (Vols. 3, Issue 1, pp. 365–387). PsychOpen GOLD. https://doi.org/10.23668/psycharchives.1786
The article written by Phillips et al., (2015) provides an in-depth discussion regarding the importance of decolonizing approaches to coping for oppressed people. Within the discussion, the authors make note of the lack of awareness regarding the causes of oppression and the tendency to consistently focus on individual factors for coping. This distinction draws an important parallel in relation to the proposed research in that it identifies a community-based opportunity for empowerment and identifying the sources of oppression to help alleviate the stressors faced by those who are affected by oppression. This community-based approach and addressing historical and systemic causes of prejudice and discrimination which result in oppression are foundational to a multi-faceted decolonization intervention proposed here.
Conclusion
The research summarized here lends to the need for a more dynamic and involved research study regarding effective interventions that result in lasting and continued reductions in individual, societal, and systemic prejudice. The importance of community-based initiatives, attention to the root causes of prejudicial and discriminatory attitudes, and the lack of effective and lasting results derived from existing research regarding the issue are supported by each reference thus further identifying an opportunity to conduct impactful research highlighting an intervention strategy which can be used through all aspects of society. The hypotheses regarding this research are the following: 1). Does an intervention designed around decolonization training reduce prejudice in participants? 2). Does an intervention designed around decolonization training provide ongoing and increased prejudice reduction?

The Individual and the Collective.

You are allowed to come up with your own, although I would like you to clear it with me first. Essays should be around six pages (not including the title page or bibliography). The themes are deliberately broad, as part of the assignment involves your coming up with a clear, concise, and convincing thesis or argument about your theme in relation to The Trial.
Your essay should have an introductory paragraph that closes
with a proper and specific thesis statement, paragraphs organized around topics that reinforce your thesis, and a strong concluding paragraph.
For this essay I want you to use at least four critical resources, so check with me if you have trouble finding the most appropriate books and/or articles. Because the library is closed, I advise you to make use of the website JSTOR (which is free to access as Dalhousie students) provides thousands of articles on numerous subjects. I will be including a list of critical articles on The Trial that can be accessed via JSTOR, regardless of location. Note: Internet sources such as Wikipedia, Douban, SparkNotes, and CliffsNotes are not critical sources. Please ask me if you have any questions about the validity of a source.
I want you to use the critics to aid your argument, but not to supplant it. Sometimes you may agree with the critic, but your argument is often enhanced by having an opinion to spar against. Be specific, focus in on key scenes or elements, and make sure that your argument is well supported with evidence and quotations from the works. When it comes to quoting from the text, comment on the quotes you use and do not simply allow them to speak for themselves. If you have any questions while writing your essays, or if you would like me to see rough drafts, please let me know
Thesis statements: please email me your thesis statements by March 28th. This is just for me to make sure that you are on the right path with your paper and that you have had a chance to come up with a clear, coherent, and concise argument that can be pursued in an essay. I will give feedback on this, as I want to make sure that everyone does a good job with the question and that finds a good angle with which to pursue it.
Note: while the thesis is not due until the 28th, I very much encourage you to email it to me as soon as you are ready. The more time you have to work on your paper with the proper feedback, the better it will no doubt turn out.
