Project Overview
There are TWO parts to this project. The final multimedia product (MMP) and a paper summary describing and explaining the content of the MMP.

Overall, you will identify a media literacy topic, issue, debate, controversy, or problem and build a multimedia project around that issue—helping others understand the implications of that topic, issue, debate, controversy, or problem for how we think about digital media in our society.

Note the MMP will answer the following research questions from writer ID 22291:
1. RQ1: What is fake news? And what are the specific impacts associated with it on society?
2. RQ2: As the blight of mis-and (dis)information continues to plague the information environment, do algorithms create or prevent fake news in the digital media?

The multimedia project should be built around a course theme or issue (e.g. algorithms, misinformation, influencer marketing, etc) but you should not feel limited by the course materials. You may do this directly by referring specifically to readings that the course offers, or you might do this more loosely by referring to the topic headings for the various modules. In fact, you are highly encouraged to go beyond the course materials and bring in examples, perspectives, and debates from outside sources to add insight and enhance your understanding of the topic of choice. Just be sure that there is a specific tie-in to the course and make it clear what that is.

Ways to approach the MMP

The project must demonstrate a connection to and understanding of concepts related to New Media Literacy. If it helps, you may want to approach your multimedia project by answering research questions. Alternatively, you may want to examine topics and issues and discuss your position/opinion. Here are some examples to guide you:

• I am going to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of online activism.
• I am going to examine the impact of disinformation on politics.
• I am going to answer the following research questions – are peers in my generation aware of context collapse? What strategies are they using to keep their identities separate? How are they managing their online identities?
• I am going to answer the following questions – what are the effects of filter bubble on political polarization?

Another way to approach the multimedia project is to show a course theme in-action, for example: Create a website with both factual and fake news headline and ways to become a super factchecker or produce an online magazine

You should have at least SIX sources (3 internal and 3 external sources) and discuss at least ONE course concept. But a strong presentation will use multiple relevant course concepts and have around 8-9 relevant sources. All sources must be paraphrased (no direct quotes), and you must have at least THREE academic sources.

Part 1: Multimedia elements

The final product should look as professional looking or sounding as possible. If you choose to do an online magazine, use templates, sections and hyerlinks – do not merely submit a wall of text.
Depending on your choice of multimedia elements, here are some parameters:

A strong project typically includes the following:

• Several multimedia elements such as videos, social media posts, images, screenshot of news headlines, podcast, infographics, etc, regardless of choice of digital media.
• Diverse sources ranging anywhere from academic sources, mainstream news media, Tedtalk videos, Canadian government website, policy papers, to primary and secondary evidence/findings (e.g., interviews, survey, poll results, etc.)

To guard against plagiarism, you must cite ALL of the sources that you use for the paper including articles or movies.

Part 2: Summary of project
A 6-page summary of your project that includes:
• a reference list of your sources (not part of the page limit)
• your rationale for choice of multimedia element,
• reasons for choosing topic/issue,
• explanation and definition of concepts used, and
• summary of key points/arguments presented in your project.

Questions to guide you in your paper summary of the project:

• What is the creative project you have produced? What issue/topic are you exploring/examining/discussing? If you are using questions in your multimedia project, what questions are you answering?
• Why did you choose your multimedia element? For instance, if you decide to do a website, explain your rationale for doing so.
• Explain your choice of the topic or issue. For instance, if you are doing your project on algorithms, explain why this topic is important.
• What course concepts did you use and provide a summary of key points/arguments/ideas you presented in your multimedia project. For instance, if your website theme is on the effects of algorithms on news consumption, describe the key points and course concepts you used in your podcast.
