Explain how this concept could be a factor in the way a person makes bracket predictions and/or thinks about the likelihood of their bracket’s success.
DIRECTIONS
The process of filling out an NCAA bracket, as well as the accompanying cognitive processes displayed by bracket pool participants, serves as an interesting opportunity to observe a number of the concepts we covered during our discussions of perception and decision making. As such, your task for this assignment is to think about how some of these concepts are at play in this context.
Specifically, pick 5 of the concepts below, describe the conflict, and explain how each might come into play when someone takes on the task of making bracket predictions or predicting the likelihood of their bracket’s success:
Self-serving bias Halo effect/horns effect
Rational decision-making model Contrast effect
Bounded rationality Intuition
Overconfidence bias Confirmation bias
Availability bias Escalation of commitment
Randomness error Risk aversion
Hindsight bias Anchoring bias
Fundamental attribution error
The submission should include 1-2 paragraphs for each concept and be around 3 pages, double spaced. Use times new roman font, 1-inch margins, and add a heading with the name of the bias you are examining before the relevant paragraph(s) for that bias to help organize your paper. For each of the 5 concepts you pick, do the following:
-Provide a brief “in your own words” explanation of the concept and how it factors into perception or decision-making processes.
-Explain how this concept could be a factor in the way a person makes bracket predictions and/or thinks about the likelihood of their bracket’s success. In other words, how can this bias or thinking error affect a person’s bracket decisions?
BACKGROUND
You don’t need to know anything about basketball to be successful on this assignment, but I’m providing some resources for those who feel the assignment would be easier with a little more information.
According to ESPN, forty million Americans (approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.) fill out an NCAA basketball tournament bracket. People who fill out brackets employ a wide variety of strategies for choosing their game-winners. Bracket pool participants also vary widely with regard to the amount of time and effort they spend making their predictions, the level of confidence they have about the likely success of those predictions, and the degree to which they are invested in the ultimate performance of their brackets. I suggest looking them over, even if you regularly create your own brackets.
The following links provide some basic background regarding the NCAA tournament and how brackets work:

This second set of links gives examples of ‘expert’ recommendations for prediction strategies (don’t feel the need to absorb every detail of each of these – they’re just provided to illustrate the idea that people take very different approaches to this process):

Discuss 1 motivational theory, and identify 1–2 motivational states that your selected theory supports as well as 1–2 motivational states that your theory does not support.
Emergent states have an effect on the levels of motivation that team members experience. Motivation therefore merits specific attention. The five motivational states are as follows: Confidence, Trust, Safety, Cohesion, and Interdependence
Discuss 1 motivational theory, and identify 1–2 motivational states that your selected theory supports as well as 1–2 motivational states that your theory does not support. Explain why.
Review and consider the types of motivational states presented by your peers. One way to approach replying to your peers is to share your thoughts on two of your peers’ responses, addressing the additional benefits of motivating teams to commit.
Explain how the social construction of “youth problems” influence our response to them?
Explain how the social construction of “youth problems” influence our response to them?
Write a reflective essay where you address this question.
Please provide examples from two of the three readings from this week that illustrate how the dominant meaning (social construction) given to a particular idea (for example, the ideas of “missing children,” “youth violence,” or “teen mothers”) led to a particular response to it.
Please also describe what alternate meaning(s) the authors discuss for the idea you chose. How would the social work practice or policy response to the idea be different if it was responding to that alternate meaning?

Briefly outline the accreditation process (steps, players, timeline).
As the chief of your department, you understand the importance of having your organization accredited and your officer staff credentialed. You have decided to pursue accreditation for your department and to get all your officer staff individually credentialed through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Officer credentials sought will be based on their job description. For example, and where applicable, training officers will earn the “Chief Training Officer” designation, risk reduction specialist will earn the “Fire Marshal” designation, and company officers will earn the “Fire Officer” designation.
Knowing this will take a significant financial commitment, you must develop a presentation for the stakeholders (e.g., mayor, city council) justifying the cost. This presentation will be based upon your research of accreditation and credentialing and must explain how your organization will benefit from pursuing such a goal.
The title of your presentation is “Accreditation & Credentialing and their Value to our Department.”
Your presentation must accomplish the following items listed below.
Start with an introduction outlining the purpose of the presentation.
Explain what accreditation is and why it is important.
Briefly outline the accreditation process (steps, players, timeline).
Identify at least one other department that is accredited that you can use as a benchmark.
Explain the return on investment (for your organization and community) of becoming accredited.
Explain what credentialing is and why it is important.
Outline specific credentials your department will seek.
Explain the return on investment for your officer staff obtaining credentials.
Explain how networking through this process can positively impact your department’s ability to improve.
Your presentation must be a minimum of 10 content slides, not counting the title and reference slides. Each content slide must have at least 30 seconds of recorded audio narration per slide. You can review the tutorial Adding Audio to a PowerPoint if you need assistance with this PowerPoint feature.
You must use at least two sources other than your textbook to support your presentation. All sources used must have citations and references properly formatted in APA style. APA formatting is otherwise not required.

Write a brief reflection summarizing the value of strengthening your ability to cite course material/sources in your day-to-day life.
Carefully review the attached document for full assignment details and “Criteria for Success”.
Watch the “MLA Citations” (opens in new window) video. You may also find these tips (opens in new window) from the Purdue Writing Lab to be helpful.
Part I: Choose a topic you are interested in and write a 1-2 sentence lesson citing a source (book, magazine, textbook, etc.) teaching me about that topic using a well-formatted MLA in-text citation. You may also use our textbook. Use the area provided on the attached worksheet.
Example A: When dealing with a weak opinion, it may be best to consider communicating that with some humility. According to Adam Grant in his book Think Again, “Communicating it with some uncertainty signals confident humility, invites curiosity, and leads to a more nuanced discussion” (117).
Example B: When dealing with conflict it can be best to address the discussion with curiosity, “by asking questions rather than thinking for your audience, we invite them to join us as a partner and think for themselves” (Grant 119).
Part II: Write a brief reflection summarizing the value of strengthening your ability to cite course material/sources in your day-to-day life. NOTE: If you recall from my “Discussion about Discussions” video there is value in “having your receipts” to back up your arguments and opinions.
Review the Criteria for Success (Table 1 on the attachment) and ensure all work is written in complete sentences.
