Special Guest Interview on Gender from Brazil

Special Guest Interview on Gender from Brazil
1- Student name. Sandy Nguyen
Professor Pagan talks about how from a biological standpoint, gender identity and expression is more complex than we have been defining it. She mentions how the body is different from the mind, as gender is a social construct that has been leading ideas like how genitalia = gender and how behavior is innate to someone gender, which she states is untrue.
Professor Pagan emphasizes how ideas even outside of gender are complex and that we should respect all sorts of complexities in life.
I believe Professor Pagans perspective does add to the discussion because her experiences as a transgender woman in Brazil is important to be acknowledged. Relatively similar to the U.S, she speaks about the violence and hate crimes done to transgender people, however at the same time there are legal rights such as being able to change ones name and gender on ID.
I think it’s important to understand different cultural perspectives when talking about gender.

The question. Please respond to the student discussion above. What are the strengths of the answer What do you like How do you see the answer What do you think?

The Social Construction of Drugs and Drug Users

Please answer four of the following questions to the best of your ability. Each response
should be 1-2 paragraphs long, typed, double-spaced, and with no grammatical or spelling
errors. No late papers will be accepted. Each question will be worth 5 points, adding up to
20 points in total. [Monday (2/7) – Upload to the canvas site by no later than 5 PM]
1. According to Erich Goode in Drugs in American Society, what is the difference between
the “essentialist approach” and the “social constructionist approach” to the study of
drugs? How do they differ in terms of their understanding of what a drug is and how it
influences the consumption of users?
2. According to Eric Goode, the term “drug” means something different when used in
different social contexts. What are the three main social contexts he discusses? How do
the differences in meaning draw attention to the social construction of the term “drug”?
3. We learned about three different theories of drug addiction. What are these three
theories? How do they differ in terms of what the causes of addiction are (Explain and
clarify each)? What is the most appropriate response of government implied by each
theory?
4. In their chapter, “The Contingent Call of the Pipe,” sociologist Craig Reinarman and his
co-authors argue that crack “addiction” is different than crack “binging.” What is the
difference between binging and addiction? What is different about the social lives of
bingers and addicts?

Please use this study guide to review for the midterm exam on Monday, February 7th.
You may use this study guide during the exam, as well as notes, lecture slides, and the Internet during
the exam… BUT (1) your time is limited, and (2) you may not PLAGIARIZE!! So, you should still study,
and be careful to make sure your WRITING on this exam is YOUR writing, not copy/pasting someone
else’s words without giving them proper credit.
That being said: you will only have 50 minutes to complete the exam (unless granted extra time
through ODS), consisting of sections of Multiple Choice, Matching, True/False, Fill in the Blank, Short
Answer, and Long Answer questions. Review your class notes and lecture slides to be familiar with the
following concepts. Can you rattle off a 2-3 sentence explanation of each? Think about them in
relation to one another. How do they connect? How do they differ? What are examples?

The Spanish Tragedy, Hamlet, Fuenteovejuna, and Tartuffe.
Review the Six Parts of Aristotle’s Dramatic Theory: plot, character, theme, diction, music, spectacle.

performances that takes place in it, both in terms of theatrical and social performance?

Look at Henry David Thoreau’s “Resistance to Civil Government.” He claims that it is not just our right as Americans, but it is also our duty to defy unjust laws. This is a very American idea. Part of the American identity involves intervening in the face of injustice. Do you agree with this point? What boundaries should exist to those interventions? Support your claims using “Resistance to Civil Government” AND one of the other assigned readings from this week.
Criteria:
300 words minimum (excluding quotations and citations)
Include two properly and integrated quotations (one from each work) to support your claims. You may use either direct or paraphrased quotes. See the Literary Analysis Tools Modules in Weeks 1 and 2 for information about integrating and citation quotes.
