River Blue

This week’s reading and film (River Blue) focused on the manufacture of one of the most ubiquitous, if resource-consuming, garments in production today: Blue jeans.

After completing the reading in its entirety and watching the film, I want you to do the following:

1. Transcribe one quote or passage you found interesting, surprising, shocking or appalling, and explain why you find it to be so in a response that is about a paragraph long.
2. Discuss one scene or part of the movie that you found equally interesting or unsettling and explain why. (Again, your response should be about a paragraph.)
2. Then, I would like for you to come up with a discussion question for class based on your chosen quote or film scene. A good discussion question goes beyond just soliciting someone’s opinion. It will encourage discussion, debate and reflection. Here, for instance, you might ask your classmates to respond to or challenge an issue raised in the quote or the part of the movie you discussed.
Alternately, you may use the quote as a jumping off point for folks to reflect on their own experience with the reading or with their own fashion consumption.

Miscue Analysis: EMMA and RMA

Miscue
Analysis: EMMA and RMA
For this assignment, please read the
articles by Kim and Goodman on RMA and EMMA. Write a typed 2-5 page paper
on miscue analysis. Explain what it is and what the difference is between RMA
and EMMA. Explain the premise behind using miscue analysis to teach reading and
to detect reading difficulties.
Do some basic research on the reading
assessment, Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS).
Explain briefly what this assessment is and what it attempts to measure.

Then write an analysis of DIBELS as seen
through the miscue analysis research. Does the miscue analysis research support
the DIBELS assessment process? Yes, or no? Explain why or why not.
What have we learned about how children
learn to read from the miscue analysis research?

Make an argument for why a specific book, film, video game, or album is your favourite

Description: For this essay you are required to make an argument for why a specific book,
film, video game, or album is your favourite. The basic requirements for this assignment are
that you need to make an argument and logically support it with adequate, appropriate evidence in a well-organized essay (aim for one with a standard 5-paragraph spread: an intro, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion). The objective of this essay is to make an argument based on your own perceptions and opinions, so no secondary sources may be used for this assignment; all arguments must therefore be based on the content and form of the text (i.e. the book/film/video game/album) you are discussing, and no specific knowledge gained from other sources may be used.

This essay will be graded using the following rubric:
• Organization (20pts): this metric reflects how well the essay is structured, but also
encompasses length and formatting. For an essay to get an 90% or higher in
organization (18/20 or more), it needs to have a clearly articulated thesis statement,
and be well-structured, appropriately spatialized (no long blocks of text or too many
choppy paragraphs), correctly formatted (MLA), and not too long or too short.
• Mechanics (15pts): Mechanics refers to the quality of the writing in terms of grammar
and punctuation. For an essay to get an 90% or higher in mechanics (14/15 or more),
there must be minimal/no obvious mistakes at the sentence and word levels. This most
notably includes spelling, word choice, comma issues (too many, too few,
inappropriately placed – this falls under punctuation, but it’s so common that it
deserves special mention), awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, improper punctuation
(colons, semicolons, apostrophes, etc).
• Evidence and Analysis (15pts): Evidence and Analysis (Ev/An) refers to the
sophistication of the examples and reasoning provided to make the ca se and prove the
thesis. For an Essay to receive an 90% or higher in Ev/An (14/15), it must use
effective and relevant examples to support its points, and must demonstrate sound
logic in its analyses.

– How is the image an example of globalization? In what way is it a manifestation of globalization as a process ( or, as something that, objectively speaking, does take place in the world) and as a discourse (or, how “facts” about globalization are, subjectively speaking, talked about)? Consider the relationship between the two (process and discourse).
– What is the role of media technologies and external reality in this image/text?
– How is the relationship between addressor and addressee established in the image/text? To what effect?
– Please find a contrasting image/text of your choice for comparison, discussion, and conclusions.
