This week we will be reading about a more apparently expressive period in ancient Greece known as the Hellenistic Age. The Hellenistic period begins w/the death of Alexander the Great, whom we shall meet through a reading about him. Then it’s on to Etruria — the mysterious ancient Italian people, who pre-date Rome.
It has long been perceived that the Romans, who were great assimilators of culture, had effectively taken Greek religion and made it Roman. However, it was the Etruscans, who adopted many of those Greek gods and shaped them into something more reflective of the Etruscan culture. It’s then from the Etruscans that the Romans get their gods.
It is also from the Etruscans we get things like judgment after death — moreso than we saw w/the Egyptians and more like what we see w/today’s Christians. The Egyptians weighed the ib or heart against the feather of truth (Ma’at’s feather) to determine the quality of one’s afterlife. But the Etruscans invented the concept of punishment after death in a sort of Hell.
It could be because the Etruscans were under significant stress from the Romans, who were beginning to encroach upon the former’s territory and way of life. The Romans essentially annihilated the Etruscans so much so that we can barely even interpret the remnants of Etruscan language that we have on grave goods.
One scholar said that learning the Etruscan language w/what we have is like learning Italian from reading tombstones.
However, despite the increase of demons and monsters in Etruscan religion, this is a culture that embraced music, art, dance, and love in a way that we might recognize today.
It is interesting to consider, however, the idea that demons or monsters represent fear in the same way that gods and heroes represent hope.

Effective Teaching and Learning of Geometry

Critically reflect and develop a journal entry that draws together understandings from the lectures, tutorial/workshop activities, prescribed readings and other mathematics education research sources, about the content area of Geometry explored in the unit.

The journal entry must demonstrate critical reflection and growing understanding of:

(a) big ideas/key concepts of the content area;

(b) students’ misconceptions and difficulties when learning the content area;

(c) teaching strategies and appropriate tasks (including materials and representations) that best support the learning of all students;

(d) curriculum progression related to the content area as articulated in curriculum documentation; and;

(e) implications for future early childhood and primary classroom practice

Annotated Bibliography assignment

Compile a Bibliography of 15 carefully sources that you are considering for your research paper. Each Bibliographic entry is worth 4 points. All the sources must be from the database via the Library link on the saint Paul college website. For each item, consider some of the questions below and write an annotation (50-100 words) explaining each resource and how it will support your thesis. Include your thesis statement above the Bibliography.
some questions to consider as you compose the annotation (the short summary) for each item in your Bibliography. Each annotation should be about 3 – 6 sentences. Also each annotation should answer the three following questions:
1 How do you know the source is reliable?
2 What is the source about?
3 How do plan to use the source? In other words, what specific information from the article do you plan to use?

Basic Tips on writing and Formatting:
Start with the same format as regular works cited list.
Format this as a single space document.
If your list of citations is especially long, you can organize it by topic.
Try to be objective, and give explanation if you state any opinions.
Use the third person (e.g.,he,she,the the author)

Cite your source in MLA Style.

Case Study Pneumothorax

CASE STUDY
Scenario
A.W., a 72-year-old woman with severe emphysema, was walking at a mall when she suddenly grabbed her right side and gasped, “Oh, something just popped.” A.W. whispered to her walking companion, “I can’t get any air.” Her companion yelled for someone to call 911 and helped her to the nearest bench. By the time the rescue unit arrived, A.W. was stuporous and in severe respiratory distress. She was intubated, started on intravenous lactated Ringer’s at KVO (keep vein open), and transported to the nearest emergency department (ED).
On A.W.’s arrival at the ED, the physician auscultates muffled heart tones, no breath sounds on the right, and faint sounds on the left. A.W. is stuporous, tachycardic, and cyanotic. The paramedics inform the physician that it was difficult to ventilate A.W. A portable chest x-ray (CXR) examination shows an 80% pneumothorax on the right.

HCO3 27 mmol/L
Spo2 53%
1. Given the diagnosis of pneumothorax, explain why the paramedics had difficulty ventilating A.W.
2. Interpret A.W.’s ABGs.
3. What is the reason for A.W.’s ABG results?
4. The physician needs to insert a chest tube. What are your responsibilities as A.W.’s nurse?
5. As the nurse, it is your responsibility to ensure pain control. In A.W.’s case, would you administer pain medication before the chest tube insertion?
6. The ED physician inserts a size 32 Fr chest tube in the sixth intercostal space, midaxillary line. Would you expect to observe an air leak when A.W.’s chest drainage system is in place and functioning?
7. Would you expect A.W.’s lung to re-expand immediately after the chest tube insertion and initiation of underwater suction? Explain.
8. Part of your responsibilities after the chest tube has been inserted is to assess for fluctuation in the water-seal chamber and bubbling in the suction-control chamber. Label the areas on the chest drainage system that you would be monitoring.

9. What do you need to document regarding A.W.’s chest drainage system?
10. While A.W. has a chest drainage system, what instructions do you need to give to the nursing assistive personnel (NAP) who is working with A.W.?
11. The secretary tells you A.W.’s husband has just arrived. What will you discuss with him about A.W.’s status and her hospital admission?
12. You approach A.W.’s bedside and ask about what look like two healed chest tube sites on her right chest. A.W.’s husband informs you that this is the third time she has had a collapsed lung. He asks whether this will continue to happen. How will you respond?
13. It is now the end of your shift and A.W.’s condition has stabilized. Using the SBAR framework, describe the bedside change-of-shift report you will give the oncoming nurse.
Case Study Progress
Because A.W. has a history of spontaneous pneumothoraces on the right side, the physician elects to perform chemical pleurodesis on A.W. after her condition stabilizes.
14. A.W. asks what a pleurodesis is. How would you describe this procedure and what will happen?
Case Study Progress
A.W. recovers uneventfully and is discharged home 4 days later with a chest tube and Heimlich valve. The physician connects the one-way (Heimlich) valve between the distal end of the chest tube and a drainage pouch.
15. Discuss the purpose of this device.
16. You teach A.W. and her husband about the care of the chest tube and Heimlich valve. Which of these statements would indicate that further teaching is necessary? Select all that apply.
a. “I will maintain a water-tight dressing around the chest tube site.”
b. “I can shower if the device is completely covered in plastic.”
c. “When I am moving around I must keep the collection system below the insertion site.”
d. “I will notify the physician if there is a change in the color or amount of drainage.”
e. “The arrow on the flutter valve should always point toward me.”
f. “I will check the insertion site twice daily for swelling, redness, and drainage.”

Summarize and synthesize 4 to 6 sources (books or journal articles, official government websites not new stories)) that are not included in course readings. This means that you should not simply provide summaries of the sources, but should explain how they relate to each other (synthesize how they draw on similar theories, come to similar conclusions, etc.) and/or offer a critique of their content.
Explain how your research project is likely to challenge, confirm, complicate, or contribute to existing work on your topic. State how your research will add to literature that already exists on the topic.
The literature review should be 3 double-spaced pages, size 12 Times New Roman font, one-inch margins or 750 words.
