Final Case Research Paper – Students are to write a 1000-word paper (approx. 4 to 5 pages) on a chapter from the Noll text, Taking Sides Issues 11 – 23 (no #19). Each paper should focus on a topic addressed in the chapter. This response paper should consist of your personal reaction to the issue as it is presented in the text. Other research must be included to help support your position. All papers must include a reference page citing research used in your paper. APA 6th edition format is required. The paper should address the educational relevance of both sides of the topic. Consider the following points in your analysis: What are the issues the stakeholders are most concerned about? How might this topic affect you (your teaching career or job)? How does this topic affect your community? What are the effects of this issue on the disenfranchised (lower socio-economic, race, gender)? Please keep in mind this is a research paper with research driving your paper. Your personal commentary should be used to complement the research. Avoid making a statement without backing it up with research. Remember both sides of the issue need to be addressed.

Choose one of the following questions and write a response of one or two paragraphs.

1. Why is it important for Chasteen to divide indigenous groups from the Americas into nonsedentary, semisedentary, and fully sedentary groups? How does this classification help clarify some of his main ideas in this chapter?

2. What other cultures were in contact with the Spaniards and the Portuguese before the “discovery” and conquest of the Americas? Why was this important for the relationship between the Europeans and the natives from the Americas?

3. Why are Brazil and the slave trade important for understanding the conquest and colonization of the rest of Latin America?

4. How did Spaniards defeat and conquer the Incan and Aztec empires, which were not only immense, but also more advanced then them in many cultural aspects? How did conquerors manage to subjugate and convert to Christianity the enormous population of these empires?

Section headings can be used to help indicate planned and current organization of content. Writing does not have to be complete – some bullet points are ok in paragraph budies, but transitions, topic and summary sentences should be edited appropriately.
Some indications that you’re on the right track
1) You have two citations or more in each paragraph (besides intro and conclusion, which typically have none)
2) You have at least 3 sections in mind – themes – that could almost in themselves be good 5 page papers
3) Sources include both primary and scholarly.
4) Be aware of whether it feels like you are advocating for something – this is not an advocacy paper but a research paper. If you’re trying to convince your reader to do something or believe something, the tone is probably not objective enough.

Community Plan
You will be creating a written community plan for how your office should move forward in addressing the policing issues surrounding homelessness in Los Angeles from a community policing standpoint. Your plan should focus on the relationship between police legitimacy and public trust, public opinion and procedural justice, community policing, and policing adaptations. For the plan, create a written product with all sections identified that addresses all of the required elements using the Project Three Scenario:
Explain the link between police legitimacy and public trust as shown in the scenario. Answer the following questions in your explanation:

Address how specific techniques, such as technology usage, may aid the LAPD in this situation.
