Joseph Campbells theories on mythology and the Heros Journey connect mythology to our everyday lived realities. In this module, you learned that all myths follow the arc of the Heros Journey and that the Heros Journey is as influenced by real-life experiences as it is the inspiration for future human creation.

Instructions: Think of a time in your life in which you have participated in the path of the Heros Journey. You could have been any of the main charactersthe hero or a figure supporting the hero.

Use a free online application (Canva, Piktochart, etc.) to create an infographic that includes an explanation of the following:

Each of the ten steps of the Heros Journey as it relates to your situation
Which role you played
What the call to adventure was
How the journey unfolded during each of the ten steps
Your infographic should be saved as a PDF document for submission.

The Heros Journey, or The Monomyth
Campbell wrote and spoke extensively about what he referred to as The Heros Journey, which is a common narrative framework in which almost every story unfolds. Nearly every figure from every mythology, every epic work of literature, and every blockbuster movie follow the narrative arc of the Heros Journey, which is why it is also referred to as The Monomyth, because it is every myth rolled into one!

Stages of the Hero’s Journey
According to Campbell, the hero’s journey follows ten stages, which are applicable to every myth from ancient Rome to medieval Arthurian romance to Harry Potter. Think of your favorite mythological story or your favorite adventure movie as you read through the ten stages below, and see if they fit!

Stage One: The Call to Adventure
This stage is where the hero is presented with a problem, challenge, or adventure.

Stage Two: The Reluctant Hero
Once presented with the adventure, the hero often feels reluctant to accept.

Stage Three: Wise Helpers/Mentors
The hero then meets a mentor who gives advice and a magical weapon. The mentor equips the hero to face the unknown, but can only go so far with the hero. At some point, the hero must confront the unknown alone.

Stage Four: Crossing the Threshold
This is the moment when the hero leaves the safety of the normal world and begins the adventure.

Stage Five: Tests, Allies, and Enemies
The hero must face allies and enemies in the unknown world and pass certain tests that are part of their training.

Stage Six: The Ordeal/The Innermost Cave
The hero arrives at last to a dangerous and mysterious place, often deep underground, where the object of the quest is concealed. The hero faces death in order to obtain the object.

Stage Seven: Seizing the Sword
Having survived the ordeal, the hero now takes possession of the treasure. Sometimes the treasure is knowledge and experience that leads to greater understanding and a reconciliation with hostile forces or important people in the hero’s life.

Stage Eight: The Road Back
The hero is not safe yet, and can be pursued by vengeful forces from whom they stole the treasure.

Stage Nine: The Resurrection
The hero emerges from the unique world, transformed by the experience. There is often a replay here of the death-and-rebirth in the innermost cave ordeal, as the hero once again faces death and survives.

Stage Ten: The Return
The hero returns to the ordinary world with an elixir of some kind for their people which is shared for the benefit of all.

When a subscriber joins the NORTH ARLINGTON HMO (NAHMO) the HMO requires that each member sign a consent agreement to settle negligence disputes between the subscriber and any HMO practitioner. The consent agreement provides that an allegation of negligence by one of NAHMO subscribers against a practitioner be submitted to a healthcare board for binding resolution. The Board is made up of a nurse, physician, one other non-medical practitioner (OD, PHARMISIST ETC) and two retired judges. None of the Board members have any relationship to the NORTH ARLINGTON HMO. AND THEY ARE COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT. John, an HMO member, signed the agreement and was treated by one of the HMOs PA for a skin disorder on his ear. The PA diagnosed the condition as a normal skin rash and treated it with topical medicines. After nearly a year, the condition continued, the ear had swelling and John, on his own, went to a recommended dermatologist for an exam. The dermatologist diagnosed the condition as a melanoma cancer and would require the removal of part of his ear to prevent the spread of the cancer. Had the condition been treated earlier asa basal cell, there would have been no need to remove part of the ear. Johns lawyer filed a lawsuit against NV HMO alleging negligence by its employee PA and seeking $500,000 in damage. The lawyers for the NVHMO moved to dismiss the case based upon the consent agreement contract and argued the dispute should go to the Healthcare Board as provide in the contract. You are the judge– would you dismiss the case and send it to the Board? In your decision (either way) what is your basis inlaw for the finding?

You are required to select and read an entire ethnography by a linguistic anthropologist to write a 3-4 page double-spaced essay (5 pages max. is allowed) that discusses the following points:
1. Brief background of the author (who is the researcher and how and why did they get involved with their topic?)
2. Main objectives of the study and methods used to collect and analyze data (What was the author trying to find out? How and when was this fieldwork conducted? What challenges did the author deal with in the field?),
3. Main arguments/findings in the book (What was the author aiming to find out in this research? What are the key points made in the book? What theories or authors are used to understand the findings in a broader context?)
4. Significance/contribution of the research to the field of linguistic anthropology (why are these findings important?)
5. Your personal opinion of the book and writing style and how the book-shaped your views of linguistic anthropology (Would you recommend this book – why or why not?)
The essay should be approx. 3-4 pgs. double-spaced (Times New Roman or similar font) with 1-inch margins. (Note: This means 3 full pages of text minimum. You may go up to 5 pgs. max. if you need more space).
Be sure to give examples and direct quotes from the book to illustrate your arguments. Be sure you have read the ENTIRE book and use examples from throughout the book to support your points.
Please include the bibliographic reference to the book at the end of your paper. For in-text citations, include the relevant page numbers in parentheses; you don’t need to include the author and year since we know you are referring to that book. So instead of (Basso 1996:5), you can just use (5) to show the page reference. If a quote is longer than 2 lines, it should be in a standard block quote format (single-spaced, indented on both sides, and no quotation marks).
