Scenario #1:
Mrs. Kehl is a single mom who is two months pregnant. She works part-time in a shoe factory and is paid minimum wage. She already has seven children and they are living in substandard poverty conditions. She does not wish to have additional children; this pregnancy resulted from a failure of the birth control method she was using. Her family is Catholic and she attends church regularly with them. On the one hand, she wants to have an abortion. She feels her children are already being hurt because of lack of money. On the other hand, she believes having an abortion is immoral. This client has come to you for help.

Scenario #2:
Mr. Ritter is 82 years old and has terminal cancer. He has lived a full life but now he is in severe pain. He is rather depressed and does not want to be visited by family and friends. Mr. Ritter pleads and begs for physician assisted suicide or else he might seriously consider taking his own life. His wife and daughter are very supportive of his wishes and believe that he should be allowed to die with dignity. You are the social worker on this case and the family is looking to you for answers.

Scenario #3:
Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair have a 2-year-old child who has profound cognitive disability and who also needs extensive medical care. They have three older children. The familys emotional and physical resources are being severely drained, and family relationships are increasingly tense. Yet the family feels the child will develop at a faster pace in their home than in an institution or in a group home. This couple is seeking assistance from you.

Scenario #4:
Mr. and Mrs. Stoneks only child was taken away two years ago and placed in a foster home because of neglect. The father drank excessively, and the mother was very depressed. Over the past two years, the Stoneks have occasionally made efforts to improve their lives but have always slid back. For the past two months, Mr. Stonek has been involved in Alcoholics Anonymous and has only occasionally gotten drunk. Mrs. Stonek presently seems less depressed and feels having her son back would make her life more meaningful. The Stoneks ask to have their child returned. This family was referred to you.

I think that big barriers amongst children and adolescents would be trust. As I stated on last weeks post, trust is a huge issue for these age groups because they are most likely being forced to go. This provides an uncomfortable environment for the child or adolescent and can making working with them very hard. Working with adults and families could be tasking because of an inability to own up to situations. For these individuals to be assessed and helped, they have to be willing to hold theirselves accountable. With older adults, the greatest barrier could be the complexity of the individual. There could be a lifetime of trauma attached to this individual and they could also be facing the end of their life. This makes it extremely hard for the social worker to feel that they are making progress.

I will do my best to generalize here and trying to avoid the risk of oversimplification. Children fear nerves which causes them to say or do what they think the adult wants to hear rather than their true expression or feelings. If we want to help young people in trouble or at risk, we need to pave a road for them that is easy to follow and will lead to a successful outcome” (Holosko et al., 2013, pg. 78) I believe that adolescents are resistant to intervention is because they are often times forced. The practitioners attempt to explore the adolescents feelings and thoughts around such issues is often met with resistance (Holosko et al., 2013, pg. 75). If there was no issues with the adolescent, the parent would not seek the help of the social worker. The adolescent may feel like their back is to a wall and the only way to act is to resist attempts at intervention. This is perfectly summarized here, A distinguishing feature of interventions with adolescents, as compared with adults, is that often the client has not sought help of his or her own accord (Holosko et al., 2013, pg. 114). Next, the reason adults have a resistance to intervention strategies is because they are in denial or unwilling to admit to a problem and that problems entirety. From what I have learned from this class is that the elderly clients arent necessarily resistant to therapy but lack the resources or access to get the help they need. Those who do have that assess are still resist I would say are set in their ways and arrogant of their abilities and capabilities and often times compare their current skills to that of their younger selves. The single greatest barrier that families have towards beneficial intervention plans and strategies is the willingness to take responsibility for their own actions and work as a team or family. Individual needs have been shown to outweigh the collective good in order for the intervention plan to be truly effective.
