Observe and assess the state of your current organization or another preselected organization. There has not been a ton of significance in grand-parenting within my family. We see each other and love one another, but my parents were very clear from the start that they would be the ones to parent and discipline us, not my grandparents. They were definitely more involved when my siblings and I were young. When we were born, my grandparents were present in the hospital, and my dads’ parents watched us occasionally when my parents were out of town. My dads’ parents and my mom’s mom have taken us to doctors’ appointments and things to help out my parents. My mom’s dad has had minimal influence on our lives because he is not a good man. They never had a supportive role, which is the way grandparents become involved during changes to the family structure (Soliz & Lin, 2013, p. 38). They were helpful and filled in gaps periodically when my mom and dad had a lot on the schedule.
As Floyd and Morman discussed, the relationships with grandparents change as you reach adulthood. Now, I do not rely on my grandparents at all and primarily see them at holidays and family functions. My grandmas and I text back and forth, but I would not call us very close. Now that I am an adult, I have control over what kind of relationship my grandparents and I have, independent of my mom and dad, which is a common experience according to Floyd and Morman(Soliz & Lin, 2013, p. 37). We also do not live in the same place, so geographic location plays a role as well.
The parent-grandparent relationship in my family has shaped the way I view my grandparents. My mom’s dad did some horrible things, and we do not make an effort to see him or be involved with him. My sister and I distanced ourselves from him once we got older and realized how he had treated my mom and aunts. The quality of the parent-grandparent relationship highly impacts the grandparent-grandchild relationship as discussed by Floyd and Morman (Soliz & Lin, 2013, p. 39).
Identity, which is who I am, impacts my relationship with my grandparents. Part of my identity is that I am loyal and value justice. I am loyal to my family members who have experienced hurt at the hand of my grandpa, so I have chosen not to see him anymore. During family holidays, there is not a choice, but I still have chosen not to have a close personal relationship with him. Another part of my identity is that I am loving and value my relationships with people, which is why I text my grandparents back and forth. However, I also value my independence, so I have a life separate from them as well.
