Every day, tell your children that you love them. Hug them at least once every 24 hours. Never hit them. If they do something wrong, don’t say “You’re bad!” Say, “What you did was bad.” No, wait-even that might be too harsh. Say, instead, “What you did made me unhappy.”…The advice isn’t wrong; it’s just ineffective. Whether parents do or don’t follow it has no measurable effect on how their children turn out. There is a great deal of evidence that the differences in how parents rear their children are not responsible for the differences among children.

The five behavioral traits associated with personality (openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism)…are influenced 50 per cent by genetic factors…So it appears that the family environment…plays only a minor role. It is our unshared environment that plays a major role in shaping who we become…what does seem to matter is the part of the environment not shared between siblings…one study suggests that the nonshared environment accounts for only 2 per cent of that variance. So what would account for the other 48 percent? Erik Turkheimer and Mary Waldron of the University of Virginia propose that it is the “unsystematic, idiosyncratic and serendipitous events such as accidents, illnesses and other trauma.”

As the above quotes imply, Judith Harris, Developmental Psychologist and Michael Gazzaniga, Professor and Director of the Center of Cognitive Neuroscience at Dartmouth College, parents play only a minor role in what/who people become. Ms. Harris further points out that the idea parents matter is based on invalid aspects of Freudian theory. In relation to this, respond to the following:
1. Is the idea of parenting (other than custodial necessary) in personality development actually a cultural myth?
2. If no, why not and if yes, why.
3. No matter which side of the debate you choose, list ways in which parents ought to deal with their children.
Remember that this dialogue incorporates three modules (Freud, Attachment Theory and Parental Effectiveness). Your resposne should reflect ideas discussed in each one.

Explain HIPAA and the responsibility of the healthcare worker in relation to the law. What is your myth and why is it important? Explain it.
Reminder: Organize your paper by the points you’re making to support your hypothesis and/or answer the guiding research question(s). Within each main point present the findings from at least one (preferably more than one) empirical article. For example, you could present four main points with 2-3 articles supporting each point.
To support each main point, summarize the findings from the research articles. What do the findings suggest?
Throughout your paper, reflect on the level of confidence the consumer should have in those research findings’ ability to inform the argument(s) in your paper (e.g., specific myth, hypothesis/guiding research question(s), main points). What is your assessment of the research designs and methods used in the empirical articles you found? For example, how effective were those researchers in terms of adding knowledge to the psychological literature (e.g., explaining or predicting something to reveal a truth that is relevant to the myth topic)? How did they test the myth or a related hypothesis in a highly reliable/valid way to reduce error, limit bias, rule out potential alternative explanations, etc.? In other words, no study is perfect, so what are your major critiques of the methodology they chose? Demonstrate your understanding of why/how the researcher(s) chose that methodology and think about how a future study could be designed differently to perhaps do a better job informing people about your myth topic. Do not include extraneous details about the methods that you do not understand – you can only effectively communicate something if you understand it. 1. How is violence against the LGB community tied to the construction of gender? (300 words)
2. You were presented with a lot of information on how the LGBT community is targeted for violence, discrimination, and hate crimes across the world. Describe what information impacted you the most, and make sure to explain WHY it impacted you. (300 Words)

Here is the chance, perhaps, for you to write the essay you have always wanted to write. The field is wide open. The only real constraints are that your topic must be based upon personal experience as I defined it, and you should be able to present a thesis encompassing the narrative you provide. You may use a series of briefer connected examples, or a single, extended, chronologically unified example. Certainly, given our series of readings, you may write about your experiences with war, either indirect, with violence, with ideas of personal responsibility. These papers cannot, however, be rants for or against war, say, or a particular war, but must be grounded in personal experience.

However, as I state in the first two sentences, your choice of subjects is your own.

The paper should begin with title and a first sentence that hooks the reader into the paper. You may place your thesis at the beginning, middle, or end of the essay, but it should fit where you place it. You will want to present strong descriptive and narrative detail throughout the paper. You will want a convincing conclusion that provides closure to the paper. My main concern is that you link your example(s) to your thesis and thus link memory to meaning.

Make sure that your paper includes the following:

a title that serves as an effective hook;
an introduction that draws the reader into the essay;
strong concrete descriptive details throughout;
clear narrative details;
a strong conclusion that provides closure and a sense of completeness for the paper;
a thesis, which provides a context of meaning for the memory or memories that your paper examines and that allows the paper to be more than a story, that allows it to be an essay.
