Problem-based learning is an approach that is being advocated for more over time (Chapin, 2013). The approach consists of a real-world and open-ended task. Problem-based learning is not an artificial exercise. Problem-based learning could be implemented using a local controversy or a school problem. Students are more likely to buy into the process because of the authentic learning experience. The definitions of problem-based learning are different but several elements are usually associated by this type of learning. The process focuses on authentic learning, requires in-depth inquiry, fosters interdisciplinary thinking and benefits from student cooperation (Chapin, 2013). Problem-based learning is often broken down in five steps. They are question, gather data, conclude, communicate and evaluate.
Problem-based learning is highly advocated but often not implemented in the classroom. The learning approach is defined differently which can make implementation difficult. If the approach is not clearly defined, individuals will work to solve a problem in their own way.
To overcome this hurdle to implementing the learning approach, the definition must be clear. One way to accomplish this is to use the classic scientific model to problem solving (Chapin, 2013). The problem must first be clearly defined. Students must be able to recognize the problem. A question that is too broad will lead to very different ways of solving the problem. Next an hypothesis must be developed. Students must then develop a plan to gather and analyze information on the problem. Once the information is analyzed, the hypothesis is either rejected or accepted. This process can be repeated until an acceptable solution to the problem is found.

Problem-based learning is an approach that is increased and advocated (Chapin, 2013). Problem-based learning has changed the focus to current problems. The learning experience is authentic. The focus is centered on students. The problem involves an action component. There are different types of definitions for project-based learning but there are certain elements included in this learning. Problem-based learning requires in-depth inquiry, authentic learning focused, interdisciplinary thinking, and student cooperation benefits.
The steps for task division problem-based learning would first begin with a question, then gather data, come up with a conclusion, communicate and finally evaluate (Chapin, 2013). Problem-solving for Dewey’s steps you would first define the problem, come up with different solutions to the problem, formulate a hypothesis for testing, gather data to support or not support their hypothesis, use many sources, and support or reject the hypothesis.
The projects encourage the use of technology (Chapin, 2013). The students would communicate what is needed done and evaluate the success of their solution. Smaller groups look at multiple plans. Skills will need to be taught directly so the students can do step-by-step . Problem-based learning is only used one or two times a year because of the time needed to do the project. Students learning and skill development makes this learning worth doing.
Classrooms do not implement problem-based learning more in classrooms because there is an increased unpredictability (Ribeiro, 2011). Teacher resist PBL due to the methodology test of what teachers know and do. Uncomfortable physic feelings come unintentionally which causes the teacher to resist the PBL. Teachers have concerns of not being able to follow the syllabus. One of the most challenging factors for teachers using PBL is there is not a priority for syllabus coverage. The priority is on the development of analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and critical thinking skills. Due to making skills a priority causes issues in the conceptual knowledge. Teachers do not feel adequate due to not knowing the concept of PBL.
A Bible verse that reminds me why as a teacher you can over come any obstacles is found in Philippians 4:13. God tells us that we can do anything with God. He will give us the strength.

In this assignment you choose and analyse an Australian media company or organisation, and consider the opportunities and challenges it faces in a rapidly changing media environment. By Australian media company or organisation we mean a media company or organisation with a significant local presence consisting of an Australian office and staff, operating in the Australian media industry.

Aim of assignment

The aim of the assignment is that you learn something about how the Australian media industry works and consider the opportunities/challenges companies/organisations currently have before them. You may also wish to briefly consider the broader social/commercial consequences that arise from the approaches and strategies companies/organisations adopt.

We suggest you approach the task by dividing your assignment into three parts:

1. Introduce your company/organisation and describe its operations, that is, its size, area of business, location in its sector, its mission and how it seeks to achieve those aims. This part should be quite factual and descriptive.

2. Outline the opportunities/challenges you think that the company/organisation faces, given its context in the sector it’s in.

3. Consider the strategies the company/organisation is adopting or could adopt to address the opportunities/challenges it faces. To do this you can draw on what you have learned about the opportunities and challenges faced by different sectors of the media industry from the lectures, reading and in class, as a basis from which to further research your chosen company/organisation.

How will I research this?

Your first step should be to find out as much about your chosen company/organisation as you can. Here are some places to look for information on most Australian media companies and organisations:

Media outlet corporate sites (as opposed to their consumer-facing sites), and the websites of media regulatory organisations and industry bodies, per the links above.
Media and news reports, especially in media about media, such as MumbrellaLinks to an external site. and AdNewsLinks to an external site.. The Conversation can also be quite useful.
Don’t forget to use library databases such as the ‘current news’ database (http://cat.lib.unimelb.edu.au/search/fCurrent+NewsLinks to an external site.) to search for news reports about your organisation (this will get you around paywalls, but in some cases only if you are on campus and directly connected to uniwireless).
Lexis Nexis (via library databases) is also a good source of reporting about sectors and companies.

Your second step should be to consider a challenge the company/organisation faces.

Most commercial media companies, no matter what sector they are in, face broadly similar challenges. The first six lectures in the subject are designed to cover most of the major issues all media companies face, for example:

The fragmentation and decline of mass audiences
The challenges of convergence (becoming reliant on external platforms for audience engagement, or competition from new digital entrants, for example)
The migration of advertising revenues to online platforms such as Facebook
Problems of ‘scale’ (usually being too small to compete with larger companies, as seen in the case of Channel 10, for example)
Public pressure to increase diversity in their presenters and content.
You’ll also find the suggested readings for each week useful!

How many references should I use?

Do remember that this is a scholarly exercise, not an exercise in opinion writing! So it’s important to back up your analysis with evidence, which might reference such things as audience demographics, government policies, information on ownership, information on particular companies and their finances, advertising and other revenue sources as well as and other factors which impact upon media industries in Australia.

For a short assignment such as this we ask that you support your considerations with a minimum of two scholarly sources (academic articles; there is a reference list for each week in the modules), plus further resources such as media reports, industry websites and industry reports (for example annual reports of companies, reports about the sector produced by government or regulatory bodies, etc). You can use any referencing style that you like, as long as you are consistent and stick to the style. There are guides here. And you’ll find you save a lot of time in the long run, with this assignment and others, if you use referencing software such as Zotero or Endnote.

We’ve attached some papers from previous years that did well on this topic (H1), although do bear in mind that the brief was wider in previous years — students looked at an entire sector rather than a particular media outlet, company or organisation.
