Assignment Question
The purpose of the paper is to review, summarize and compare the articles and their major findings. The paper should be about 7-8 pages long, double spaced, and formatted according to American Sociological Society requirements — see Quick_Tips_for_ASA_Style.
The paper should be structured as follows:
Part I: Describe the goals of these articles. What do they try to explain and/or accomplish? Why do the authors of these articles think that these explanations or goals are important?
Part II: Describe and compare theoretical perspectives used in both articles by using section on “Theories of Deviance” from Part II, pp. 57-72. Are theories used symbolic interactionist, functionalist, conflict and/or their various derivatives/combinations? Are they macro or micro theories?
Part II: Use textbook’s chapter on “Studying deviance,” pp. 109-113 as well as handout from the lecture on research methods to describe the data and research models/methods used in both articles.
Part IV: Describe and compare the major findings of both articles. What did you personally learn from these articles? What do you think is their practical value (i.e., in shaping social policy)?
