Assignment Question
Our work this term is focused on understanding how gender influences, and in many cases determines, healthcare provision and availability. In this course you will devote considerable time to addressing how social and natural scientists and health professionals read, and critically evaluate the literature on this topic, and how this information may inform public policy and/or healthcare legislation. One way that you will pursue this aim is by picking a major topic within gender and healthcare, and writing a 5-7 page literature review that critically analyzes your topic.
Assignment Instructions Your literature review should be organized and presented in a professional manner.
Suggested sections to include are as follows: 1. An introduction to your topic. Here you can provide information such as: a. The history of the topic. b. Theoretical background regarding different “lenses” through which your topic may be interrogated and/or explained. c. Why this topic is important. d. Which groups in society are most impacted by this topic? e. What impact does this topic have on the healthcare system? This introductory information should be chosen with support of your paper’s thesis topic in mind. As such, it is up to you to critically “pick and choose” which literature you include in your paper for this section. 2. Provide a synthesis of the scientific evidence that is relevant to your topic/thesis. This information will comprise the majority of your paper. For this section, you may use scholarly literature from the natural sciences, social sciences, or both. Be sure here to use primary research from quality sources – particularly for natural science. Review articles are acceptable and will be helpful if available. a. Note- be sure you are not simply summarizing your chosen sources article by article.
The purpose of a literature review is to provide a coherent, succinct synthesis of the research you reviewed to gain insight into your chosen topic. Therefore, you should be looking for themes/connections across studies and critically analyzing the literature. 3. Provide a conclusion that ties together the information you have presented in section 2. What conclusion(s) can be drawn from the available literature? How might this information be used by natural and/or social scientists going forward to influence public policy and/or healthcare legislation? What further research should be undertaken to clarify what is known on this topic?
