An Argument for your major (Middle Level Education Major)

In
order to successfully complete this assignment you will first need to analyze your
choice of major using the elements. This
step will require that you examine the logic of your major, in the manner that
Nosich demonstrates in Chapter 3, and that you examine your own circumstances,
including background, life goals, etc using the elements. Once you have done that you should be able to
argue that your major is the right choice for you. If you find yourself unsure about a major,
you can use this assignment to explore a discipline that you are
considering.

In
a 800-1000 word essay, you will demonstrate that your choice of major is well
reasoned. Your essay must clearly locate
the reader mentally, establish your voice of authority and take a stance. Your stance must be supported from at least
three perspectives (Psychologically-how are you emotionally matched to your
field?, Sociologically-what will your career require of you in terms of the
people you will be working with on a daily basis? where might you have to live
to pursue a career in this field? Economically-what
might you expect to earn and what will that mean to your goals of family or
lifestyle? Politically-will you be able to do work that matches your views on
service to your society, your country, humanity?, etc) and your argument must
include a concession/refutation. These
parts are explained in the Argument powerpoint lecture.

You
may write this essay using the first person “I”, but you should always avoid
the second person “you” in academic arguments.
Additionally, I would like for you to avoid the use of questions in your
paper. Too often our questions are
rhetorical and can lead to misunderstanding of important points. Think about the point you are trying to make
with a question and make the point in a statement instead. It will make your writing stronger.

Juveniles who commit suicide due to sexual assault in juvenile facilities

Make sure you develop a detailed outline as you review the literature and before start writing. That outline should develop main topic headings and subheadings.
For example: a early section of the paper should address suicide as a problem. You are dealing with a very specific type of suicide: is it different than others and why? We know suicide is a serious problem, why is it a problem in a juvenile correctional facility.
Why due to sexual assault within the facility what about other types of assault?
This problem can be supported with a table on the number of juveniles who attempt vs successfully complete suicide, by several years. And the different types of suicides within the facilities.
As you read the literature you will be able to narrow down the topics to include.
What will be your case to the governor of your home state (Texas) regarding the following topics: I. the current state of juvenile offending in your state (list your state and select a juvenile crime; clearly state why that delinquent act is a problem in your state (use statistics for the crime using the UCR compare at least 5 years statistics, use at least two newspaper reports from the selected state and about the selected crime/delinquent act); II. Tell the governor how things about the crime/delinquent act have changed in your state and/or neighborhood from a personal point of view: for example you can address your life as a teen versus how things look now. This section makes the selected problem personal: you can describe how you were raised (and experienced) and address changes in your neighborhood/state, the school, etc. and connect your personal to the general (the selected crime/delinquent act as it has changed over time). III. the best explanation of that delinquency (use one of the theories on the textbook; link the theoretical assumptions and the problem as you have described it to the Governor and the statistics used in I & II above; and, IV Conclusion: your recommendations for policy and practice as a result. Include any empirical evidence to support your points. Your topic must be pre-approved by the instructor.
The paper should be up to 8 pages in length or 2,000 words (includes references). That means you must give about equal writing time to all the topics above.
The paper is to be analytical, with an emphasis on integrating the readings and outside sources into a cogent discussion on some relevant issue that can be theoretically addressed using the theories on the textbook (a criminal/juvenile justice problem).
You paper must clearly be divided into the above described 4 sections. These will be the basis of the grading.
Papers should be formatted according to the American Psychological Association Manual Writing Guidelines which are most comprehensively covered in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 7th. Ed., although condensed and simplified versions of the APA formatting a referencing requirements may be found on-line and in other writing manuals. This chapter emphasizes the increasingly global nature of marketing. Many of the brands that are considered U.S. brands are actually now owned by companies outside the U.S. Which raises another issue… what determines if a brand is a U.S. brand? Look at 2 or 3 of the brands listed below and find out if they are U.S. owned brands. Any surprises? What determines if a brand is a U.S. brand or not? To earn full credit for discussions your post must be substantive, include chapter concepts and verbiage and you must reply to at least one other student with a reflective or probing comment. Simply parroting ‘I agree…’ or ‘Great post Sally!’ will result in 0 points.

Third wave

By the 1990s, women were enjoying the benefits of higher education and entrance into the corporate world, working as doctors, lawyers, professors and politicians, as well as competing in most major sports. However, for the majority of working women in the United States, their pay scale for the same work done by a male was significantly lower than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the feminist movement had been thwarted, criticized and held back enough that females had to endure sexual harassment, physical and mental abuse, and received less credit and fame as male actors and athletes. Use the contents of this course as a guide: the documents in the course and textbook, Power Points, and especially my Power Point later in the semester, plus the work of leading journalists, sociologists and women’s historians to report on the final efforts at achieving full equality and “protection under the law.” This, as well as everyone’s civil rights, should have been protected and insured from the founding of this country. Has the third wave been successful yet?

Using “The Roman Empire Divided” describe the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire at the time of Constantine in 500 words or more.

Describe an experience you might encounter in the near future where, based on past experience, you would probably behave reactively. Review the situation in the context of your Circle of Influence. How could you respond proactively? Take several moments and create the experience vividly in your mind, picturing yourself responding in a proactive manner.

Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can’t keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are “response-able.” They don’t blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn’t, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather.

Describe an experience you might encounter in the near future where, based on past experience, you would probably behave reactively. Review the situation in the context of your Circle of Influence. How could you respond proactively? Take several moments and create the experience vividly in your mind, picturing yourself responding in a proactive manner.

Remind yourself of the gap between stimulus and response. Make a commitment to yourself to exercise your freedom to choose.

Develop an Improvement Plan for Your School or Organization

For your Signature Assignment, you will develop an improvement plan for use within your own learning organization. Although you will be developing the plan, you will not have to actually implement it for this class. Use the template provided in the Books and Resources for this week.
You will be writing this plan as a member of the leadership team of your learning organization. Begin by identifying an area of improvement you would like to address within your organization.
Your area of improvement should be related to one of the following general areas:
Leadership and Student/Learner Achievement
Leadership and Instructional/Training Practices
Leadership and Professional Development for Staff/Constituents
Leadership and Family/Community Engagement
Leadership and Organizational Culture
Your plan will:
Introduce the areas of improvement:
Identify the general area of improvement (for example, leadership and student/learner achievement).
Explain the specific area of improvement (for example, math test scores of 9th grade second-language learners are below average).
Supply documentation, including dataset(s) and analysis that supports the existence of a problem in the identified area of improvement. You may use a dataset from your organization, if available, or you may generate a fictional set of data. (See sample dataset.)
Include supporting research (what has been written about your area of improvement, as it relates to the role of leadership in addressing the problem).
Include an evaluation of the overall culture within your organization.
Produce a self-evaluation plan for the leadership team.
Provide a list of 3-5 other individuals (by title, not name) who can serve on an improvement committee with you. You should choose committee members based on their functional role and who have knowledge and expertise in the area you are focusing on in your improvement plan.
Generate a list of internal and external stakeholders and a plan for including stakeholder feedback into your improvement plan.
Develop an action plan including a timeline.

Socrates Squad: The Case of the Inquiring Murderer

Socrates Squad: The Case of the Inquiring Murderer
In this discussion board, your task is to attempt to figure out some way that you can “solve” the Case of the Inquiring Murderer, remaining 100% true to Kantian Ethics and remaining morally right.
You may solve this puzzle on your own or you may enlist the assistance of others — a friend, roommate, family member, TikTok followers, you name it.
Remember, lying does not pass the Categorical Imperative (neither version that we have covered learned). You are morally forbidden to lie under any circumstance.
Report on your solution
Problems with Kantian Ethics
Problems
1) The Case of the Inquiring Murderer: According to Kant it is always wrong to lie—it does not pass the categorical imperative. Here a problem:
Suppose that your friend Joe is being chased by a someone possesses by homicidal rage and seriously intending to kill him. Your friend Joe comes to your door, tells you he’s going to hide in your shed. Then a few minutes later the murderer comes to you door, banging on it, and inquiring: “Do you know where Joe is?” As a Kantian you are obligated not to lie.
This case seems to show there is something much too rigid (restricting) about Kant’s theory. It seems obvious that you should lie and that it is morally right to try to save the life of your friend by lying to the murderer. If you are a Kantian, however, you could lie, but you would be morally wrong to do so.
Real Life Case: Dutch Fishing boats in WWII hiding Jewish refugees. These unarmed boats were stopped by SS patrols. Were they wrong to lie? It seems that lying was the RIGHT thing to do.
This is a very serious problem for Kantian Ethics. Many people have tried to solve it (unsuccessfully).
2) Conflicting Maxims:
Perhaps there was another maxim that You and the Dutch Fishermen were following: Protect human life against evil doers. Maybe you need to follow this absolute moral rule and not the one against lying. This poses a problem for Kant’s view, because absolute moral rules are just that—absolute. How do we rank them if there are two rules in conflict? Kant doesn’t provide us with a way to do this—it’s impossible. The very meaning of an absolute moral rule is that it is absolute and isn;t outranked by another more important rule. This seems like an intractable problem.
3) Tinkering with the Maxims: Maybe we could solve this problem by making our maxims very specific. So we might formulate a maxim, if anyone in my shoes were to be asked by a murderer where someone is, lie to them. It might appear that this maxim could be universalized—but it would also change the theory so substantially that it stops being a way to formulate moral rules. Once you add personal qualification based on circumstances that you are in, surely you could justify anything you want to do. Anyone in your shoes might do what you decide. But this starts to look like Ethical Egoism. (You become the center of the moral world.) The strength of Kant’s theory was that it universalized moral rules—provided rules that everyone, everywhere would have to follow. Tinkering with our maxims leads us away from the strength that the theory had.

Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth (The Hero’s Journey)

In this forum, please post a contemporary example of a hero (movies, TV series, graphic novels). You may post a YouTube clip (use Mashups in the menu) or a picture along with your explanation. Remember that mythological structure doesn’t have to take place in a magical world. For example, Miles Morales in Into the Spider-Verse. Another example is Dr. Grey from Grey’s Anatomy. She dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps.
Explain how your example connects to Joseph Campbell’s ideas on the Hero’s Journey.
