2. A salesperson uses random digit dialing to call people and try to interest them in applying for a charge card for a large department store chain. From past experience, he is successful on 6% of his calls. On a typical working day he makes 160 calls. Let the random variable x be the number of calls on which he is successful.

a) Check to see if the sample size / normality assumption is satisfied.
b) Construct a 99% confidence interval for the population mean annual earnings. (Include StatCrunch print-out.)
c) Interpret your confidence interval from part (b). Round your interval to the nearest dollar in your interpretation.

4. In a survey of 2040 U.S. adults in a recent year, 650 made a New Year’s resolution to eat healthier. a) Check to see if the sample size / normality assumption is satisfied.
b) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population proportion of U.S. adults who made a New Year’s resolution to eat healthier. (Include StatCrunch print-out.)

5. Use the data from Chapter 7 (Chapter 7 Review Exercise 43 – scores for grade 12 students on a science achievement test). An education publication claims that the mean score for grade 12 students on a science achievement test is 140. You want to test this claim. You randomly select 36 grade 12 test scores. The results are in the data file (Chapter 7 Review Exercise 43). At the 5% significance level, do you have enough evidence to reject the researcher’s claim?

c) Discuss any association / relationship between these two variables (including strength of association and whether it is a positive or negative correlation).

e) Find the residual for the hot dog with 110 calories and 330 mg of sodium.
f) Use your prediction equation to predict the sodium content of a hotdog that is 120 calories. Round your answer to the tenths place and include units with your answer.

Our text is focused on understanding differences this week, and one of the differences discussed is related to the consideration of second-language learners. Gram Staining
Technique
Purpose: To practice staining technique and to be able to
differentiate between gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
Procedure:
Part One
– Heat Fixing Bacterial Smear
1.
Using sterilized wire loop, place one droplet of
water on slide.
2.
Following aseptic technique, pull from the stock
bacterial culture and place a small amount in the water on the slide. Smear
bacteria to a quarter size area on the slide.
3.
After all of the water dries from the slide,
quickly run the slide through the flame twice with the bacterial sample facing
away from the flame.
Part Two – Gram Staining Process
1.
Place heat fixed slide on staining rack in a
tray to catch excess chemicals.
2.
Place enough crystal violet on slide to cover
bacterial sample. Let sit for one minute.
3.
After one minute, take the slide with a
clothespin and flush with water being through and getting all excess crystal
violet off the slide.
4.
Place slide back on the rack and put enough iodine
on sample to cover. Let sit for one minute.
5.
Flush with tap water on both sides of the slide.
6.
Place slide back on rack and use the Alcohol
(gram decolorizer) on the slide letting it sit for 10-12 seconds before rinsing
it off with tap water.
7.
Place the slide back on the rack and place
enough safranin on the sample to cover. Let sit for one minute.
8.
Flush the slide with
tap water and blot the slide with the bibulous paper.

Discussion:
Based on the results, I can determine this bacterial sample
is gram negative because it held the safranin counterstain. Crystal violet
holds on to the thicker peptidoglycan on gram positive cells while being washed
away with alcohol from the gram negative cells that have thinner peptidoglycan.
If these steps were to be reversed and the safranin was used first then the
crystal violet, everything would appear blue because there would be no alcohol
rinse to get rid of the excess crystal violet. In addition, the iodine plays a
major role in cementing the crystal violet to the gram positive cells and
allows it to resist the alcohol wash.
