In
what ways does Willa Cather’s (1905) short story Paul’s Case bear out
Foucault’s (1978) argument in The History of Sexuality, Volume 1?
Illustrate with reference to the text.

2.
Normative
sexual and gender identities depend for their coherence and stability on the
repudiation of a marked, abject other – a devalued category which forms
the ‘constitutive outside’ of the normative identity. Illustrate with
reference to everyday discourses that surround a sexual or gender identity of
your choice.

3.
Richard Dyer
discusses how popular cultural representations ‘perform heterosexuality … in
such remorseless, crazed and alarmed modes that they suggest heterosexuality is
indeed on a hiding to nothing in its assertion of its own naturalness and
normality’ (1997, p. 272). Discuss, with reference to the context of
Dyer’s argument and a cultural representation of your choice (taken from film,
TV, popular media, fiction, etc.).

4.
In a 1981
interview, Foucault remarked, ‘the disappearance of friendship as a social
relation and the declaration of homosexuality as a social/political/medical
problem are the same process’. How does the problematization of
(homo)sexuality limit the possibilities of friendship? Illustrate with
reference to examples of your choice.
Notes:

Based
on my brief research for this question, I think the
interview was actually conducted in 1982.

Ive attached another document called Help with Q4 that
is of an article called 30-Friends which might help to answer
this question.

Below
is a section of dialogue I copied from the interview
with Foucault (M.F.)
with questions asked from an interviewee (Q) on
the topic of Sex, Power, and the Politics of Identity Page 170 – 171

o Q. You mentioned in an
interview in Gai Pied a year or two ago that what upsets people most about gay
relations is not so much sexual acts per se but the potential for affectional
relationships carried on outside the normative patterns. These friendships and
networks are unforeseen. Do you think what frightens people is the unknown
potential of gay relations, or would you suggest that these relations are seen
as posing a direct threat to social institutions?

o M.F.: One thing that
interests me now is the problem of friendship. For centuries after antiquity,
friendship was a very important kind of social relation: a social relation
within which people had a certain free-dom, certain kind of choice (limited of
course), as well as very intense emotional relations. There were also economic
and social implications to these relationships-they were obliged to help their
friends, and so on. I think that in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, we
see these kinds of friendships disappearing, at least in the male society. And
friendship begins to become something other than that. You can find, from the
sixteenth century on, texts that explicitly criticize friendship as something
dangerous.

The army, bureaucracy, administration, universities, schools, and so
on-in the modern senses of these words-cannot function with such intense
friendships. I think there can be seen a very strong attempt in all these
institutions to diminish or minimize the affectional relations. I think this is
particularly important in schools. When they started grade schools with
hundreds of young boys, one of the problems was how to prevent them not only
from having sex, of course, but also from developing friendships. For instance,
you could study the strategy of Jesuit institutions about this theme of
friendship, since the Jesuits knew very well that it was impossible for them to
suppress this. Rather, they tried to use the role of sex, of love, of
friendship, and at the same time to limit it. I think now, after studying the
history of sex, we should try to understand the history of friendship, or
friendships. That history is very, very important.

And one of my hypotheses, which I am sure would be borne out if we did
this, is that homosexuality became a problem-that is, sex between men became a
problem-in the eighteenth century. We see the rise of it as a problem with the
police, within the justice system, and so on. I think the reason it appears as
a problem, as a social issue, at this time is that friendship had disappeared.
As long as friendship was some-thing important, was socially accepted, nobody
realized men had sex together. You couldn’t say that men didn’t have sex
together-it just didn’t matter. It had no social implication; it was culturally
accepted. Whether they fucked together or kissed had no importance. Absolutely
no importance. Once friendship disappeared as a culturally accepted relation,
the issue arose: “What is going on between men?” And that’s when the
problem appears. And if men fuck together, or have sex together, that now
appears as a problem. Well, I’m sure I’m right, that the
disappearance of friendship as a social relation and the declaration of
homosexuality as a social/political/medical problem are the same process.

What were the principles of the Republican Party as expressed by Abraham Lincoln in 1858?

Term Paper 2 Topics
Topic 4 (Chapter 14): The Civil War remains the bloodiest conflict in American history. Today, many Americans continue to study the events leading up to this violent calamity. First, summarize the contested issues that led to the Compromise of 1850. What was the Fugitive Slave Act and how did Americans react to it? Next, explain the political ramifications of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. What event gave rise to the Republican Party and what did this new party believe? Next, explain the importance of the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott Ruling. What were the principles of the Republican Party as expressed by Abraham Lincoln in 1858? Finally, describe John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry and its results. How did this event impact the results of the 1860 election?
Topic 5 (Chapter 22): Before the Civil War, the United States was primarily concerned with internal affairs. However, after the conflict ended, the United States started on a path that would lead toward global empire. Today, the United States maintains large, permanent military bases in the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. First, explain the evolution of American interest in foreign affairs from the end of the Civil War to the early 1890s. What contributions did Fred Jackson Turner and Alfred Thayer Mahan make to the creation of this empire? Next, detail how business, religious, and social interests contributed to this goal. What were the origins of the Spanish-American War and did the conflict intersect with other American expansions to solidify the new position of an American empire? Finally, explain how economic power helped to expand America’s empire in China. How did the foreign partitioning of China in the last decade of the nineteenth century influence American policy?

Conservation of endangered Suckley Cuckoo Bumble bee Species

hello I have attached the assignment requirements in the box however as it states endangered species mine is on the Suckley Cuckoo Bumble bee

Instructions
Complete all three of the following steps:
Sign up for a species. Sign up on the official class sign-up list (see Class Collaboration). There can be only one student working on each species, so sign up early.
Research your species. Research the biology and ecology of your species. Look up its current conservation status, population trends and major threats to its population. Find out what conservation efforts are in place for your species. Evaluate their effectiveness and piece together a comprehensive conservation plan.
Write and edit a detailed conservation plan report. Write a 2000-word report that includes the following four sections (use subheadings):
i. Biology and Ecology: Describe the biological importance and uniqueness of your species. Explain its functional role within its community, interacting species (e.g. prey, predators, competitors etc.), its habitat requirements (e.g. food, shelter, nursery habitat, special mating areas etc.), its reproductive capacity (e.g. how many offspring and how quickly it could bounce back if threats were reduced), and its range (previous extent and current of species distribution). This section should answer why it is important to conserve your species.
Threats: Describe how the population and range of your species has declined (give numbers). Give a brief account of the main cause(s) that contributed to its decline and its current threats. Based on credible evidence, explain to what extent the current status of your species is due to habitat loss, climate change, invasive species, pollution, and/or over-harvesting/hunting. This section should explain in detail why your species is endangered, using evidence (numbers wherever possible) from reliable sources.
Conservation Plan: Develop a well-supported action plan to help this species recover. You need to address the main threat(s) you identified in the Threats section as well as the habitat requirements and reproductive capacity identified in the Biology and Ecology section. You can be creative and devise your own ideas, but make sure to reference several plans already used for this species (or other species in similar situations) and describe their relative successes. Try to figure out how to bring together and improve the existing framework of conservation for this species and improve upon it. Identify gaps in the protection of your species and gaps in knowledge that need further research. This section explains what you plan to do to save your species. See Important Guidelines section below for specific guidelines while writing your report.
References: This section is the full APA Style references list for every in-text citation. You need an APA intext citation for every statement of fact or group of facts in your paper. You should have cited in your paper at least four peer-reviewed journals as well as at least six other credible sources. You should have at least 10 cited sources in total. Use proper APA style for each citation; it is not sufficient to include just the URLs. See Important Guidelines section below for more details.
Important Guidelines
Be concise; this is a short paper, which should be clear and logical.
Use your own words, simplify the terminology in the articles you use, and define the terms
you use. A non-scientist classmate should be able to understand your paper.
If you are guessing or making an arbitrary judgment, be clear about your level of uncertainty
(e.g. it seems likely that … given …).
Italicize scientific names (Genus species).
Make sure that it is easy to trace the logic of your paper through all three content sections.
Make sure to edit and proofread carefully. Plan on changing sections to clarify key points.
Do not hand in a first draft.
Do not use direct quotes; paraphrase and cite.
Citations are required for every statement of fact. If in doubt, cite it. You wont lose marks for
too many in-text citations. But you will lose marks if your claims arent cited.

Education in Finland vs. The U.S.

Reconsider the article The Children Must Play by Samuel E. Abrams.
In this article, with which we began the course, the author develops an argument in which he asks us all to consider education in Finland. He hopes that in so doing, we will have a strong model on which to reflect as we consider our own system of education in the United States.
Please develop an essay in which you respond to two of the following topics below (about a page per topic). Again, choose two.
III. Multicultural/ Monocultural Aspects in Education
Some people argue that the cultural plurality in the United States (many people from different cultures, many people speaking different languages, many people practicing different religions, etc) is a fundamental characteristic that contributes to widening the achievement gap. Discuss Abrams argument regarding this topic as he considers two monocultural and otherwise homogeneous countries (Finland and Norway). What are your thoughts on this comparison?
IV. Providing Equal Opportunity in Education (Ethics)
As you read this article, do you think that the model of education described by Abrams succeeds in providing equal opportunity? Consider Finlands mixed-ability groupings, the policy of not holding back students for failing to meet standards, or not tracking students until late in their schooling. What are your thoughts on these social practices as you think about the situation in the US, which does not traditionally favor these aspects?

article: “The Children Must Play” by Samuel E. Abrams

The first point made in the article regarding childhood education in Finland is that student are given more recess time than in the U.S and more art programs. It is stated that in Finish schools the recess time is 75 minutes instead of 25 minutes as it is in the U.S (Abrams). There is also attention payed to art and hands on learning. This differentiates from American schools because in the U.S art programs are seen as expendable. In the documentary about school funding, it is demonstrated that students that are offered art programs do much mentally and academically than students who are not provided art programs. Student that are enrolled in schools that receive less funding and therefore do not offer art classes will statistically resort to violence and crime as they have no other way to express their emotions and will often end up dropping out of school.
Providing a hands on education method means that Finish schools rely less on mass testing. In American schools standardized reading, writing, and math tests is the focal point of education. Various studies have proven that standardized tests are not an ideal tool for education. For example standardized test scores do not correlate with a students intelligence or overall academic performance. Common core testing also puts an unnecessary amount of anxiety and pressure on young students. Many teen and children suicides are due to stress caused by standardized tests. There has been an increase of parents opting out of having their children take common core tests.
In Finland teachers are also given higher wages than in the U.S. and with higher standards. Higher wages and equally higher hiring requirements for teachers will directly increase the quality of education children receive. And by making education a more rewarding career path it will gain more attention and participants.

AReflection 4: Technological & Infrastructure Disasters: Texas Deep Freeze and Colonial Pipeline Hack

Please read the Keim article included in the Readings content area (articles folder) in the context of the research sweep we did in class on Thursday involving these two disasters and their tiered impacts. How likely are we to experience more disasters of this type and how serious do you think they may be? What mental health impacts could you project we will find associated with them?
Once you have completed your analysis, please develop a 500 word reflection summarizing what you have learned and what you conclude and/or project. these connections. What major aspects of the Texas Deep Freeze and Colonial Pipeline Hack are foreshadowed or projected from Keim’s 2008 analysis?
