Evaluate Didion’s rhetorical strategies to determine how successfully her argument demonstrates sound critical reasoning.

Assignment Question

Our assignment encourages the development of the critical reasoning skills necessary to construct well- organized, well-supported, and engaging essays. In order to do so, you must demonstrate sound critical reasoning skills in your own writing while critiquing the work of another. Joan Didion’s essay, “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” recounts the counterculture movement of the 1960s in California; however, how she constructs this argument is of greater significance for this assignment.

With this in mind, respond to the following prompt:

Evaluate Didion’s rhetorical strategies to determine how successfully her argument demonstrates sound critical reasoning.

When constructing your argument, (choose 5/5 sources) consider Didion’s use (or misuse) of: • Ethos • Logos • Pathos • Tone • Third-person • First-person Your essay must be typed (12-point font, Times New Roman, double spaced, standard 8 ½ by 11-inch paper, with 1- inch margins at the top, bottom and sides).

In addition, your essay must be at least 4 full pages and formatted within MLA guidelines. Lastly, you must include an MLA formatted Work Cited page (which does not count toward the 4- page minimum length requirement)

Use this for: Works Cited – Didion, Joan. Slouching Towards Bethlehem. New York: Farrar, Straus and Ginroux, 1986. You must utilize third-person and present tense to remain unbiased in your analysis—thus successfully incorporating your own use of ethos You must utilize logos by incorporating examples from Didion’s essay for each of your main claims. • You must include at least five body paragraphs. o This means you will be evaluating at least five different rhetorical strategies.

o Each body paragraph must only address one claim: § For example, you can argue how and why Didion’s use of pathos is correct, or incorrect. o Each paragraph should analyze how and why Didion uses a particular strategy either successfully or unsuccessfully (or a combination of both). o Therefore, if your thesis, for example, argues that Didion’s use of pathos is unsuccessful, you must include a body paragraph that proves that claim is correct. • Each body paragraph must include at least one quote from Didion’s essay o Quotes must utilize a lead-in so as to incorporate the quote as part of a complete sentence. • Quotes must be analyzed—you must explain how and why the quote you’ve included proves your claim regarding Didion’s use (or misuse) of rhetoric. • Since you must have at least five body paragraphs, you must include at least five different quotes—you cannot use quotes more than once. • Your conclusion should include what Didion could have done differently to improve her use of rhetoric. Lastly Joan Didion’s “Slouching Towards Bethlehem”.

They also should be aware of possible civil liability for the actions (or inactions) of themselves and their attorneys if a suit for legal malpractice is brought against the firm.

This exercise will help familiarize you with this type of tort and make you more aware of the potential consequences of your and your attorney’s conduct.

Anita Athlete, a famous fitness instructor, sues a competitor, alleging that it copied her fitness method and made millions of dollars selling the videotapes and DVDs. She hires ABC Law and sues for the lost profits, among other things.

She advises her attorney of a crucial witness to the case. Her attorney decides not to interview that witness, believing there is enough evidence without that witness to win.

Unfortunately, they lose the case. Anita Athlete now has come to the law firm where you work. She wants to sue ABC Law for attorney malpractice.

Your supervising attorney wants to know whether there is enough evidence to proceed on the claim and asks for your analysis.

Research the laws of your state (statutes, cases, etc.) and draft an internal memorandum to your attorney in Microsoft Word format discussing your findings. Cite all sources using Bluebook format.

Read Matthew 7:24–27 and contrast the wise and foolish builders. What does Jesus emphasize about His words, i.e., what should we do with them? (Cf. Ja. 1:22; Jo. 14:23-24) What happens to both houses? Why did the first house stand? Why did the second house fall? (Cf. Ez. 33:30-32) How does this relate to godly wisdom?

Describe a negative trend in criminal justice that you identified in your selected population group. Explain the factors causing the trend according to current research.

Assignment Question

Exam Content Various population groups within the justice system have different needs, which can require specialized approaches to meet the needs effectively. Agencies regularly form departmental committees to discuss ways of improving their processes to better meet the needs of the public and the agency. As a criminal justice professional who serves as a member of a committee that is meeting to discuss process improvements for the upcoming year, you have been tasked with researching recent trends in a specific population group in the criminal justice system and making process improvements. Preparation Select 1 of the following protected classes or another group that is tracked in federal or state crime data for your area: Age Race or ethnicity Sex or gender Religion Language Socioeconomic status Disability or status of physical or mental health, including pregnancy, HIV, or COVID-19 Type of offense, length of sentence, or solitary confinement status Note: Do not use juveniles as an example demographic for this assignment. Select 1 focus population based on your selected protected class or tracked group. Research recent trends for the population group you selected using the tools on the All Data Analysis Tools page on the U.S. DOJ Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) website and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Crime Data Explorer website. Consider improvements that could be made to improve the justice process for this population. Assessment Deliverable Write a 700- to 1,050-word executive summary in which you explain how to improve justice processes for a specific protected class in a prison population based on recent trends. This summary would be for the committee at the annual meeting. Based on your research, include the following information in your summary: Describe a negative trend in criminal justice that you identified in your selected population group. Explain the factors causing the trend according to current research. Describe the unique considerations that this protected population raises in the U.S. justice system. Describe how U.S. prisons and jails address and/or fail to address the needs of people who are incarcerated who belong to this protected population. Explain how these special considerations affect the system and its processes. Provide specific examples supported by research. Identify a potential solution or strategy that could have a positive impact on this trend. Explain any current trends for improving justice processes for this population and why you think the solution or strategy you identified would improve processes for this group. Advocate for the solution you identified by explaining the changes required to implement it, such as increased funding, more specialized training, organizational changes, or other requirements to make the improvement. Cite at least 2 scholarly sources and 1 peer-reviewed source to support your summary. Format citations and references according to APA guidelines.. Submit your assessment.

Assignment Question

Scenario You are a paralegal; your job is to review applications for a class action lawsuit. Currently, you are working to find individuals who have been exposed to high levels of arsenic in the local drinking water, negatively impacting their health and development. (Learn more about the impact of arsenic on human development on the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry website).

You are meeting with individuals seeking to join in the lawsuit due to their health experiences. However, your boss is acutely aware of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study and is highly concerned that the individuals in the community have other exposures or genetic issues that have influenced their health. Link for reading: https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/arsenic/physiologic_effects.html Consider Jacob. Jacob is a 45-year-old man who is married and works a full-time job as a coal miner. Jacob was born with born developmentally delayed. His IQ is low, and he was in speech therapy throughout his childhood. Jacob had bladder cancer when he was 12 years old. He received chemotherapy and has been in remission since. Jacob’s parents divorced when he was ten due to domestic violence and alcohol abuse issues in the home. His father was an alcoholic, and Jacob’s parents smoked cigarettes. Jacob always had a positive relationship with his mother, who did her best to protect him from abuse and his father’s anger. Jacob and his mother have a tight bond because of their experiences with Jacob’s father. Jacob has not seen his father since the divorce and recently learned that his father died from lung cancer. Jacob struggles when he gets mad, often yelling or stomping around and hitting walls. Jacob’s mother often showed fear when Jacob would get angry as a teen. Jacob’s extended family constantly notes that he is the spitting image of his father, sharing a similar height, weight, and coloring. As Jacob ages, he is starting to have health problems similar to his mother, including skin lesions and respiratory issues. The lead attorney has asked you to go through Jacob’s summary and highlight things that might be related to Jacob’s exposure to arsenic in the drinking water. He also wants you to explain which things may be related to genetics and the environment in which Jacob was raised. You will use the following template to provide the needed information in your report. Since your analysis will be used as a part of the case, you must use complete sentences to explain your assessment as well as academic sources, references, and citations.

Explain Parfit’s argument. Do you think Parfit is right that identity is not what matters? Why/why not?

Assignment Question

In this paper, you will write an essay of at least 1800 words (but no more than 2000 words) in response to the following prompts: If you teletransport to another planet, we might wonder whether the resulting person is you; that is, we might wonder whether you have really survived the process. Derek Parfit argues that identity is not really what matters when we consider our futures in such cases. He reaches this conclusion by considering fission, or “branching” cases. Explain Parfit’s argument. Do you think Parfit is right that identity is not what matters? Why/why not? A philosophy paper consists of the reasoned defense of some claim
• Your paper must offer an argument. It can’t consist in the mere report of your opinions, nor in a mere report of the opinions of the philosophers we discuss. You have to defend the claims you make.A good philosophy paper is modest and makes a small point; but it makes that point clearly and straightforwardly, and it offers good reasons in support of it. This is not a research paper; you do not need to cite sources outside of the assigned texts. You should be wary of consulting outside sources. Why?
• Many of them are very bad. Without knowledge of credible journals etc., you are likely to stumble upon some very bad philosophy.
• I don’t want to see the most interesting/sophisticated/convincing argument out there. I want to see your argument. You can (and often should) write in the first person. (e.g., “I will argue that…”)
• You should say at the very beginning (i.e. the introduction) of your paper what your thesis is, and what your main line of argument is. (No surprises!) Sophisticated, technical, or unfamiliar language is undesirable. Say what you want to say in the clearest way possible. (Philosophy is hard enough as it is!)
• Quotations are undesirable if they take the place of your explaining the material yourself. You should make the structure of your paper obvious to the reader. Your reader shouldn’t have to exert any effort to figure it out.
• How can you do this? Make it clear what sort of move you’re making at each point in your paper. Say things like: …We’ve just seen how X says that P.

• Nothing should go into your paper which does not directly address the prompt. Explain yourself fully

• pretend that your reader is lazy, stupid, and mean. He’s lazy in that he doesn’t want to figure out what your convoluted sentences are supposed to mean, and he doesn’t want to figure out what your argument is, if it’s not already obvious. He’s stupid, so you have to explain everything you say to him in simple, bite-sized pieces. And he’s mean, so he’s not going to read your paper charitably

In a 4–5 page paper, use the Financial Trend Monitoring System to identify financial factors affecting the financial solvency of a state, a local, or a nonprofit agency.

Assignment Question

In a 4–5 page paper, use the Financial Trend Monitoring System to identify financial factors affecting the financial solvency of a state, a local, or a nonprofit agency. You may choose a new agency to analyze or use one of the agencies you looked at in a previous assignment. (A federal agency or department should not be used for this assignment.) Using the financial factors from Table 7.1, pick 2–3 factors and conduct a trend analysis. Evaluate selected financial factors by analyzing financial data over at least the last five years. Title this section Trend Analysis. See Table 7.1 Factors Affecting Financial Condition for a list of financial factors.

Create a table or chart with each factor indicating the direction of the trend. Title this section Data Analysis. (Note: This section should only consist of at least two or three tables or charts.) Justify your table or chart for each factor by writing a brief evaluation of the trend. Title this section Trend Evaluation. Develop and explain a policy statement based on your findings to manage areas of concern. Title this section Policy Statement.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: Include an Introduction and Conclusion in the 4–5 page count. Your cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, the date, and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The library is your home for SWS assistance, including citations and formatting. Refer to the Library site for all support. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is: Evaluate financial trends for a selected agency and propose fiscal recommendations.
