Assignment Question

Introduction to Essay Questions The first half of this course has introduced you to a variety of ways to think through ethical dilemmas. You should be getting better at reasoning through the problem and coming up with a way to handle it that is consistent with your values. This essay provides you with a chance to reflect on ethical dilemmas you have faced in the past and to consider the approach you used to resolve the problem. Try to remember your thought process at the time, realizing that sometimes those are hard to reconstruct after the fact. The essay should demonstrate a few things. First, it should show me that you understand the topic of discussion (handling ethical dilemmas). Second, it should demonstrate that you are able to apply the topics and decision-making processes to past experiences in your own life. Third, it will show that you can articulate your thoughts into a coherent, well-written, concise structure.

Instructions Think of an ethical dilemma you faced in the past either as an individual. Describe the factual circumstances of the dilemma and clearly lay out the conflicting ethical issues at stake. Using the “Steps to Ethical Decision Making” framework, reflect on which method of that framework you most relied up in making your ultimate decision and try to recall and describe your thought process. Why did you make the decision that you did? Was your decision-making approach intentional, or more instinctual or habitual, or were you pressured into making a decision? Would you make the same decision today, or would you make a different decision? Why? Word limit – 1500 words. Focus on (course slide) and (course pack) for Group Activity 3 – Three Ethical Approaches,The eight characteristics of moral disengagement,and “Steps to Ethical Decision Making” framework.

In your own words, explain what the phrase “widening the net” means. What might be some of the unintended consequences of increasing the number of offenders who are supervised by corrections officers in the community?

Assignment Question

Answer the following questions in 8-10 sentences each.

In your own words, explain what the phrase “widening the net” means. What might be some of the unintended consequences of increasing the number of offenders who are supervised by corrections officers in the community? How does the process of prisonization differ between male and female inmates? Discuss the four basic philosophies for sentencing criminals. Which of these philosophies do students most identify with? Are there any that students disagree with? Which of the four do students think is most consistently applied in our correctional system today? Discuss the difficulties that female officers face in a male correctional facility. Do you think that female officers should work in male prisons? Why or why not? Discuss which type of offenders should be under intensive supervision. Which offenders are more likely to get caught doing something illegal: offenders under intensive supervision or offenders under normal probation? Explain. Suppose that the U.S. Congress passed a new law that punished shoplifting with a mandatory eighty-five-year prison term. What would be the impact of the new law on shoplifting nationwide? Would such a harsh law be justified by its deterrent effect? What about imposing a similarly extreme punishment on a more serious crime—a mandatory sentence of life in prison for, say, drunk driving? Would such a law be in society’s best interest? Why or why not?

Write a 6-page thesis driven essay on any topic you found of particular interest the second half of the semester that you would like to present more formally as your culminating course paper.

Assignment Question

Task: Write a 6-page thesis driven essay on any topic you found of particular interest the second half of the semester that you would like to present more formally as your culminating course paper.

This paper requires you to identify a philosophical issue of importance to you and present a clear thesis on the topic. In addition to using your course readings, you must also minimally use one (1) outside source. This need not be from an academic journal, just an example of your topic in current events or a current application. Your goal is to explain your philosophical topic to an audience (me) in a more academic tone as a thesis driven essay. You will use your readings to support your argument or to present a counterargument, depending on your topic. You are not starting from scratch! These topics have all been considered in our weekly discussion forums. While your discussion forums focused more on summary, your goal in this paper is to refine your thoughts on your previous work and to present the arguments with greater academic complexity. As such, focus on close analysis of the texts while providing direct evidence (through relevant quotes) to support your thesis.

As such, here are some of the possibilities for how to construct your final paper topic/thesis. 1.) Is ethics dependent or independent of belief/existence of God? 2.) What does ethics have to do with notions of free will, personal identity and/or behaviorism? 3.) Can one have moral knowledge like one has scientific/mathematical knowledge? 4.) What does ethics have to do with the problem of evil and human suffering in relation to defining God as divinely omniscient and benevolent? 5.) Do notions of immortality, life after bodily death, and eternal rewards and punishment have an effect on how we define ourselves?

Other suggested general topics: 1.) Comparative study/notions/existence of God in relation to science and secular atheism 2.) The nature of the self and mind (philosophical, scientific, and psychological) 4.) Machines/persons/Artificial Intelligence, in terms of human knowledge 5.) Particular ethical theories that fit with your broader definition/understanding of the self, personal identity, and human knowledge You are limited by the above suggestions: they are simply food for thought in terms of what I am looking for with the paper. Not to worry, I will help you along the way through the steps of submitting a proposal, individual Zoom meetings, helping you verify the applicability of your outside sources to your topic and reading drafts. You must submit a proposal and at least one draft as part of your final grade.

General Guidelines: The essay should be roughly 6 pages. This is a page minimum; you may write as much as you like. Size 12 font 1” margins on all sides Follow MLA formatting for in-text citations Full works cited page in MLA format You must use at least 3 primary sources from your online textbook and at least 1 other outside source

What makes this particular film a philosophical discourse? What ethical issues are presented? Is there a specific theme throughout? What? How are these issues addressed? By whom? Is the film successful in addressing the particular issue(s)?

Assignment Question

You will write a short response essay from the provided prompts. The short response essay must be a minimum of 2-3 pages in length. Each assignment choice (below) consists of detailed instructions. You must have the assignment name (e.g. Ethics in the News) and due date printed at the top of your essay. You are free to choose the topic of your choice (from the list). The essay must be typed in MLA format (12 point font) and written at an academic level. If you have any writing anxiety, I suggest presenting a rough draft for my comments/suggestions. Also, the campus Writing Center is a wonderful source for assistance. If you use any outside source information (on those that require such), you must offer in-text (parenthetical) citations, as well as a Works Cited page. If you have any questions concerning citations or avoiding plagiarism, please ask me. The essay is worth 100 possible points (10% of the total grade). Ethical Film Analysis 2-3 page essay examining ethical issues in a particular film (chosen from list below). If you decide to use a film that is not on the list, you must get my prior approval. You will analyze the ethical issues/questions/concepts at work in your chosen film. You are not writing a movie review – avoid the “I like/dislike it” trap. No outside sources are to be used for this essay (only the film). You will be analyzing the film and how it relates to the ethical concepts discussed in the textbook and classroom lectures. Be sure to introduce the film’s title and any key actors in the introduction. Be clear which film you are discussing. You are viewing this film as a philosopher, not just an audience member waiting to be entertained. The viewing itself is a philosophical exercise. Discuss the particular ethical ideas and themes as they relate to the ideas discussed in this course (text and classroom discussions).

Points to ponder: What makes this particular film a philosophical discourse? What ethical issues are presented? Is there a specific theme throughout? What? How are these issues addressed? By whom? Is the film successful in addressing the particular issue(s)? How? What specific theories (from text and class discussion) do you recognize? Possible films are listed on the following link: http://www.carnegiecouncil.org/education/002/film/index.html

According to Ismael, what is lost when a person dies? Why does Ismael think that death, rather that robbing our lives of meaning, instead gives our lives significance?

Assignment Question

According to Ismael, what is lost when a person dies? Why does Ismael think that death, rather that robbing our lives of meaning, instead gives our lives significance? Do you think she is right about this (both about the claim that death provides our lives with significance, and also about how it does)? Why or why not?

Notice that the prompts generally ask you to do two things: (1) explain an argument or position, and (2) evaluate that argument or position. Task (1) requires you to demonstrate that you understand what we have read and discussed in class. Task (2) requires you to use your own reasoning and arguments to evaluate the positions we’ve discussed in class. You should strive for clear writing. You may have a brilliant argument, but if you don’t communicate it clearly, we won’t be able to give you credit for it. When you are evaluating an author’s argument, be sure to evaluate the content of that argument rather than their presentation of it. Make sure you have answered all parts of the prompt. In general, you should try to avoid doing outside reading in the preparation of these papers.

The readings we have done for class should be sufficient. cite your sources using any standard citation format (MLA, APA, etc.). A paper rubric is provided at the end of the syllabus. It would be prudent to review this!

Briefly characterize the place of the topic in King’s life and work; summarize the ongoing debate about the topic- take a side in the debate in one’s own voice for reasons one articulates clearly.

Assignment Question

The goal of the paper is for students to take a well-informed stand in the ongoing philosophical debates about King’s ideas. Papers must therefore accomplish three things:

1. briefly characterize the place of the topic in King’s life and work;

2. summarize the ongoing debate about the topic;

3. take a side in the debate in one’s own voice for reasons one articulates clearly.

First paragraph should be a single sentence stating what you will argue in this paper. For example, “In this paper I will draw on John Rawls’ theory of justice to show that MLK’s practice of civil disobedience is morally justified, despite the concerns raised by Herbert Storing.” Next task (may take several paragraphs): Define the central terms in the thesis, and briefly discuss the place of the topic in King’s thought and work. For example: define civil disobedience and contrast it to several other forms of law breaking and then describe briefly the way King practiced and thought about civil disobedience. You may draw on earlier readings from King’s writings and/or biography, too. Next task (again, may take several paragraphs: summarize the ongoing philosophical debate about the topic. Be sure to explain as clearly as possible the reasoning for and against King’s ideas. Here you will need to draw on the sources assigned in class. You may draw on earlier readings from the history of philosophy, too. Final task (again, may be several paragraphs): State in your own voice which side of the debate convinces you, and explain why. Ideally, at this stage of the paper, you will also imagine at least one objection those on the other side would raise to your thinking, and respond to their objection.
